The old trucks have decent payload because they don't weigh 8000lbs empty but have the same tire on the road.

My SRW Dodge 3500 won ton has the same payload as the family bought new in 1951 Dodge 1 ton grain truck over in the shed. Only difference the 1951 grosses 8000lbs and the 2006 pickup weighs 8000lbs empty :)
