Thinking of a 3500 D-Max

Looking to trade my 2008 F350 dually 4.10 rear on a 2008 Chevy 3500 6.6 3.73 dually, My Ford gets about 8-9 towing and is going into regen every trip out now. You think I will see a increase in MPG with the new Chevy? It only has 12k on it. and has a B&W turnonver in the bed.

  • I use an 08 2500HD to pull a 28' Desert Fox that is filled to the gills with equipment and weighs right at 12.5K I get 8-10 mpg pulling that trailer. As far as dependability, pretty hard to beat. 80K and only the power locks had to be looked at it. I average 14 as with around town and over the road without a load. Interstate, nontowing about 17-18.

Like someone says your mileage may not be a lot better, but you certainly will have a more dependable truck that holds its value.

is a regen on every trip excessive? Do you mean everytime you pull the RV for a long distance?

No average trip is about 80 miles. Twice last Thursday to and from the campground, we had to cancel that trip, but went Fri and it regen'd on the way to the campground, and then on Sunday back to the house and then again on Sunday from the house to our next campground.

  • Had a 2008 2500HD and the lifetime MPG was 14 (Both towing & solo). Now I have a 2011 3500HD DRW and so far the average is 14 MPG. While "Your mileage may vary", I gotta think you should get metter fuel economy with the D-Max and 3:73s.

Well in IMHO it has the best hitch and it is the second best truck.

I am sure it will get a bit better mileage.
  • Probably not. while Fords are notorious for lousy fuel economy, no dually is going to give you much better. But the Chevy sure will be more reliable in the long run.

Now if you were to change to a Cummins, I could say YES you should see an increase.
  • Doubt you will see any significant economy (mpg) improvement between the two..maybe slight with the rear gear change from 4.10 to 3.73.

But, if you have the bug and want a new truck - that's good enough reason.
