After you put the trailer on the ball and latch it, you raise the trailer/truck with the hitch jack a fair amount; Then you put the spring bars on. Raising the trailer/truck minimizes the force needed to latch the bars with the cheater bar. And by raising the trailer/truck, you are assured your trailer is firmly latched to your truck.
