Thoughts on 1st trip with our new TT

Picked up our new Outback yesterday and brought it home, traveled on everything from interstate to dirt road. Was a little nervous with the length,37', and being I have always pulled a 5th wheel. Was pleasantly surprised on how well it pulled. Nice and straight, went through some small towns with many turns, no issues. The Equil-i-zer hitch didn't make near as much noise as I anticipated but I think I may have to use a cheater bar a while when hooking up. Now we just need to load her up so we can stay in her next weekend, can't wait.

I don't have the dual cam arms. I have the integrated cams in the spring bars. Haven't felt the need for the arms. Right now I just have the chains. The arms will be easy to add if I want them in the future.

Your Reese HP trunion style hitch is an antisway hitch and you don't need a brake for sway. The Trunions keep the trailer inline when both are down in the Cams and adjusted properly.

I like reading these good towing threads. I too was surprised how well our 32.5' TT towed after towing 5th wheels for years. We have no sway control on our Reese HP trunion style hitch. I raise the tongue just enough to use the short bar that came with the hitch without too much effort. Good choice on the Equalizer. Wishing you a fun trouble free weekend with your new TT!

Troublewaters is right on. Raising the back of the TV with the trailer jack makes it so much easier to put the sway bars in place.

Congrats on your new Outback!

As stated above, after you hitch up, raise the trailer jack (up), which will lift the trailer tongue and your tow vehicle. If you raise it high enough, you NEVER have to use the cheater bar. My dealer who installed my hitch and set it up used the cheater bar to show me how it works. Having had a Reese with chains on the bars before, I knew that was the hard way. I have never used the cheater bar.

Raise tongue jack. I keep a 7 inch block under the tongue jack so it will lift nice and high!

See photos: Look at the tongue jack. 4 layers of 2x6, crisscrossed and screwed together. I've been using this same block for over 15 years. I keep painting it new colors:

If you hitch up on a flat surface and dont have to use the cheater bar, the setup is way too loose and isn't doing anything to transfer the weight.

After you put the trailer on the ball and latch it, you raise the trailer/truck with the hitch jack a fair amount; Then you put the spring bars on. Raising the trailer/truck minimizes the force needed to latch the bars with the cheater bar. And by raising the trailer/truck, you are assured your trailer is firmly latched to your truck.
