Thoughts on new truck purchase

Not looking for the "my truck is better that yours" discussions. I have been a GM guys for a long time (but not set on a GM) and I am starting to look at new diesel trucks. Currently have a 2012 D/A pulling a Montana 3750 5'er. What features / options should I look at for each of the brands? TIA, Mike

Cummins diesel with the Aisin trans is a great combo. If you can wait for the right time, Ram offers the Cummins as a free option. That’s a $9k savings. It’s the only reason I have a diesel now. It was free! The bed camera is nice too for fiver hookups as is the rear air suspension.

Bought my first RAM Cummins in 1994, and have watched and followed them ever since. I have seen small and large discounts, however I have never seen an add saying the diesel option was free. When we bought the current 2015 it was marked down 11k+. :B :B :B

Ram calls it “no charge Cummins option”, they don’t actually use the word free but it comes out the same. I no longer have the ad from when I bought it but here is an article discussing a similar incentive. This one is no charge Cummins OR better financing rate. I got the no charge Cummins AND zero percent financing plus employee pricing and matched down payment up to $1500 and a couple other little things added in. The dealer couldn’t find exactly what I wanted but gave me all the same incentives with a factory ordered truck.

FREE option??? Really?

Free if you pay full MSRP?

My window sticker and order sheet show the diesel as an added $9,345 option. My invoice shows a $9,345 rebate for it, on top of other incentives. That would make it a no cost option. I got the diesel truck for $1k less than the same truck with a 6.4l Hemi. The only reason I bought it.

You can only get a good deal on a RAM truck by traveling to a specific dealer in Boise Idaho, no matter how far it is from where you reside. Where I came upon that fact slips my mind........ahhhh it was on this board.
Too many geezers, self appointed moderators, experts, and disappearing posts for me. Enjoy. How many times can the same thing be rehashed over and over?

Yeah, well they called them crew cabs. I assume you're talking about the megacab.

No, extended cab is what you're talking about. Half size doors, half size seats. Dodge quad cabs 03-09 in HD trucks, we're like a 3/4 size back seat. Crew cab = full size doors, full seat. Mega cab = expensive bigger. Same size seats and similar leg room as a crew, but seat also reclines some.

IMHO, diesels are not worth the additional cost UNLESS you drive more than 30,000 miles a year, towing/carrying a large load.

None of the current gassers will handle his 15.5k 5th wheel.

A properly equipped F350 with a GAS ENGINE is rated at 16,000+ for 5th wheel towing.

I am confident on the Ram DRW 3500/aisin trans. with either 3.73 or 4.10 rearend. Tradesman thru the Longhorn trims. Solid built interiors and plenty of power with a sweeping look exterior that looks pretty slick. I drove Silverados of all sizes for 30 years until I got in these newer Rams.

I owned a Ram as early as 2002 with 4 doors, granted a smaller cab. But there are a ton of Chevy 4-doors with a smaller cab and a ton of extended cab trucks being used.

I'm not bashing any brand either. Everybody has their own preferences. Maybe it's regional. Maybe we've had different experiences.

Like I said, Dodge didn’t offer a crew cab until 2010.....well halftons in 08.

Yep. Ford owns the Fleet world because they sale them cheaper.

I bid fleet vehicles annually and that is not always true.

When I bought my '17 Ford I checked into fleet pricing and ended up getting a better price buying retail. At the same time I priced a Ram. Ram fleet pricing was about $6k better the best price the same dealer would offer on retail. Ram fleet beat what I paid for my Ford by $3k.
