Tire blows - great reason to have a dually

We were returning from San Diego this afternoon when the inside dually let go on Interstate 8. Wife was driving and didn't realize it was a tire issue; she only heard a loud rumbling. She said the truck handled fine with the blown tire.

All the truck and trailer tires looked fine and I didn't find the blown tire until I thumped on each one. At this point I haven't examined the tire but did see a large slice of sidewall missing from the inside-facing side.

Glad we have a dually as things could have been drastically different with a SRW. I imagine the blown tire would have dropped onto the rim and perhaps a handling issue would have ensued with 18k of trailer (3,500 on the pin).

Glad everything worked out for you. But I have a few questions.

One, are 3500 and up trucks with DRW exempt from the tire pressure motoring systems? If not why didn't your DW say the warning on the dash? If any of my tires are under 34 psi a warning chime goes off and the DIC puts up a warning saying "LOW TIRE PRESSURE" with the tire location.

Second, as was noted if you are running heavy and continue driving with only one of your dual's you had better replace both tires. You could end up buying all four rear tires if they are more than 30% warn.

Also those two extra tires do you no good if a front tire blows out, just saying.

^First, you talked trucks in general no OPs truck specifically.
Even still, sure it would be overloaded. Prolly was carrying 4000lbs all on its lonesome over there!!
Poor lil tire........pffft who cares.
Second, I qualified my statement to some of the reasons it may need changed, so yer generalizing again for the benefit of argument, lol.
Last, woukd you really do what you just said?
Dually, decent tires, lets say half tread or better, got 2 tons in the bed. Pop a tire, pull over 1-10 miles later, however far. Telling me you're going to put the spare on and drive straight to the next tire store and buy 2 tires?
1 to replace the one that committed suicide and another to replace the one that got its feeling hurt?

Like I said, must be a tire salesman.

Having it checked out is cool though. Not as drastic as buying a new one just because.
Cheers man!

Any chance the tire was run flat long enough for it to just come apart?
If the other tire is weakened, it will let you know. I'd run it on the outside (easier to change).

For sure.
However, the statement "have to replace the tire that didn't blow cause it was overloaded" is absurd in normal conditions.
I'm certain there are conditions that could damage the good tire in that scenario. Driving for days on an overloaded single tire. Tires were old as dirt to begin with. Tires almost worn out anyways. But to say unilaterally that both tires must be replaced in this situation must mean one of 2 things. Either you sell tires for a living or your tire shop LOVES to see you walk thru the door!

OP has a 3500# pin weight in addition to the trucks weight

One tire flat.......for how long/how far???

Regardless other tire was overloaded. Damage was done.
How much????

Replace both especially if tire size is more than 1/4" due to wear on other tire
OR at least have the tire that was overloaded broken down and inspected inside for signs of damage.

Other option is to drive on and wonder when will that tire give out from the damage done from being overloaded

Or do you not think it was overloaded?
Is it time for your medication or mine?

I worry more about handling a front blow-out than rear.

Hey now, I never said having a dually you can drive for another 800 miles with a blowout. However I have witnessed where the person had one and was able to make it to his destination then get the tire serviced without having to stop on the side of the highway.
BTW, that other tire on the rear lasted another 2 years for that person, allowing him to replace all 6 at once.

Glad everything went well fo you guys, blown out tires can be a hazard. Had one rear blow in my old truck while pulling the trailer, no issues just pulled over and changed it. No loss of control, no really rim damage. Could have been worse though I'm sure. Anyway glad all went well.

If the driver did not realize a tire had gone bad you are lucky the other dual did not go.

A very good reason to have a TPMS system.

The original post just makes me happy to have a dually truck. Having to be on the side of the road would not be a fun deal for any of us.

A couple years ago my father had a blowout on the rear of his dmax dually, just continued going, this was what pushed me to buy a dually.

Honestly the cost of tires doesn't bother me, my truck has standard 17" wheels and are cheaper than my previous SRW truck that had 20" wheels.

"A flat tire on dually just means 2 tires to purchase cause the tire that didn't blow was overloaded"

Have to agree with Old-Biscuit

Had an inside tire on my Class-C blow out a couple months ago; I didn't think about the load on the single tire and only changed the one tire. The other tire failed 3 weeks later (another blow out).

My tires were 7 years old so I replaced all 6 and keep the tire the was beside the tire that blew out the second time as the spare.

I don't get it. Since I don't even have an "inside tire", I don't have to worry about the "inside tire" blowing out. So in theory, having a dually just increases your chances of having a blowout by 50%.
