Torklift FastGuns size confusion

I'm using Torklift frame-mounted tie downs with FastGuns on my Bigfoot camper. I've always had a problem with the rear Fastguns being too long. All four of my Fastguns are the same size.

Measuring from the top to bottom attachment point, my front Fastguns are extended to 35"-36" while the rear Fastguns are 31"-32".

I have the "Long-Range" size which Torklift says have a range of 25"-43". If that's true, I should have no problem but as I've said my rear Fastguns are too long (with the bottom "screw-shaft" screwed in as far as it will go). It does work for me (just barely) but is sometimes a bit loose and cannot be shortened any further.

I removed one of my Fastguns and measured from the top to bottom attachment point (obviously with no spring tension). When the "screw shaft" was screwed in to the maximum, the overall length was 31 1/2" - when the "screw shaft" was un-screwed to the maximum, the overall length was 42". But Torklift advertises the "Long-Range" Fastgun to have a range of 25"-43". The 43" number is close but the 25" number is way off! The actual range is about 10" - not 18"!

How does Torklift get the 25"-43" range?
  • I'm not sure, but why don't you cut a few inches off. Also, are you sure you have the mounts right as in, the left on left and right on right?

Yes, I can cut off a few inches and will do so. Just would like to know where Torklift is getting their 25"-43" range?

The frame mount tie-downs were installed by Torklift in Kent, WA in 2003 so they are mounted correctly.

    You could always call Torklift.

2X...torklift has always been so helpful with any questions that we have had with our torklift stuff. A "real" person actually answered the phone!
  • My torklift instructions say to cut them off to shorten them in order to fit. My bet is they will tell you the same on the phone; the range includes 'trimming' the length of the threaded shaft.
  • I had to cut the threaded rod to fit. I also added different mounting points on my Bigfoot so they would clear my dually fenders. I took some angle iron 7' long mounted to the tc then drilled holes in the angle iron to move the connecting points farther forward & back. That caused the rods to be shortened up even more, but atleast I'm clear of the fenders.
  • Right from the manual.

In order to get the shortest length, the rod must be cut.

I've been to the factory, met the owner and lead engineer. Went there just looking for stickers so I could repaint all my Torklift stuff.

Great people, shockingly helpful from the top of the organization to the bottom. And I got a free hat!
  • On your slide-in bracket for the frame mounts, you have to separate attachment points, maybe the forward point will help you. K
