This should be it. Looks like 8600 tow cap. Seems fine. Value...5700 to 6200.

I am trying to find the max towing capacity. Anyone have a great website that has all the stats? Some have it - some don't. Axel code = c9.

Looking good all! Thanks so much. Do you think 6900 is an ok price for that year and in the great shape it appears to be in? Have not seen it yet. Was gonna thro out 6000 and maybe be ok with 6500?

Some folks have wild or unreasonable expectations while towing. Your friend may have encountered steep hills that had to be pulled in third gear rather than overdrive, or he expects to maintain 65 mph on even the steepest hills without the engine running higher rpm's than it does on level ground. So he falsely states that the vehicle is underpowered. The 460 engine is great for towing, and will have no issues towing your trailer. That is an awesome F-250 you are looking at.

Are you sure that the friend of your friend actually had a 460? Gear ratio can have either a positive or negative impact on how a vehicle handles a trailer, so if he had more highway gear than towing gears he could have had some issues. Either way I can't imagine that a fuel injected 7.5 liter engine would have any trouble pulling a small trailer like that. Without having all of the information and assuming he really did tow a 6k trailer and had trouble with it I would think that he probably had the 351 instead of the 460. My Uncle had a '92 f350 with the 460 in it and it pulled like crazy, very stout engine. Anyway I wouldn't be the least bit concerned about this towing combo. Just get out there and have some fun.

I agree 100%. Get out there and enjoy

@Eric...Cool.

I just got a text that the gear ration his friend had was a 3.73. I am a newbiw at all this - but I do know that is the lower.

Thanks for the encouraging comments!

Mine in 6500. If I assume 1500 max loaded. I am at 8000. The owner said the 96 F-250 tow capacity was 8800. That leaves a decent margin I guess of 800. Seems fine to me.

unless a 460 has serious problems it would have no problem pulling 6000lbs.
Actually the best mileage we have ever gotten with our 87 460 was 11 mpg
while pulling 21000lbs. normally 8 to 10 was the norm loaded or empty.
talk about overloaded, and it handled it well. .

What is the tow rating for this truck?????? Its legally your responsibility to get an adequate tow vehicle for your trailer. Personal opinions are risky to follow. Get the facts from the manufacturer.

Wow...thansk all. getting great responses. Bummin me out that my friend said his friend had issues with a 95. Is there any diff in 95 vs 96? I spoke with my friend last night. He says his friend was pulling 6000. BUT....how do I know he did not overload it?

We have an 87 460 and we just used it this week to pull our 16ft stock trailer loaded with calves. It was light compared to normal loads , but the trailer grossed about 8000lbs. Normally we are moving steers or cows and that will run about 12,000lbs, It handles it just fine. We have 175,000 miles on the truck. We use it for all of our hauling when the camper is on our other truck.
If it's in good condition it is very capable to haul 6500lbs.
Good luck, Jon

It depends on the trailer. A fifth wheel or gooseneck might be a problem with the short bed. A tag along should do just fine with the long wheel base.
