The G8 was made by Holden, an Austrailian auto manufacturer, there the V8 is rated to tow around 3500lbs, the V6 goes up to almost 5000lbs.
Here is what I found. It is called the Commodore down there, the link mentions a towing kit, probably like a tow package here.
If your brother could actually find a properly rated hitch it might be OK for short close to home trips but without a tranny cooler and extra engine cooling he may be pushing his luck. I used to tow a Coachmen 16B with similar specs as his and it was an easy tow but I had only towed it with half ton pickups.
Good luck to both you and him.
Thanks for the look up. I'm in a campground right now and any signal is slow. I knew the G8 came from Australia, and I knew they were rated for more over there. The only difference is the name. I would tow a 16ft 3k lb TT all day long with a V-8 G8! In fact it has a tranny cooler in the radiator.
Just because it isn't a truck doesn't make it a bad TV! We've been brainwashed here to believe anything other than a truck can't tow anything. In fact the Crown Vic used to be able to tow 5k lbs. but one year they derated them and nothing changed. In reality they realized people were buying the more affordable crown vic instead of the more expensive trucks. This made everyone think think the cars couldn't do it anymore. It's all just a show. Trucks are more profitable. That's part of the reason they want you to buy one to tow something.
I'm not saying towing a 10k lb trailer with one is ok. But a little understanding is smart.
I for one don't believe a V-8 Pontiac G8 towing a 16ft 3500lb is crazy!
