Towing with Toyota Tacoma

I'm considering a new truck, perhaps a Toyota Tacoma. How much do you pull (would you pull) with a new V6 Tacoma with auto trannie? The towing capacity specs are towing capacity 6400 lbs and tongue load 640 lbs.

Thanks,
John

There is a member on here, profdant139 I believe, that tows all over the west with their Tacoma. I would search for posts from them to get a good answer to your question.

I think a Tacoma would be a fine tow vehicle for a smaller travel trailer, just watch the specs.

my son has pulled my 6000 lb equipment trailer out of his back yard for me on more than one occasion with his 4 banger taco! Then again, he has a locker, 4wd. My non locked rwd 3/4 ton is rather useless when the grass is wet!
At the end of the day, if you have enough payload for what you are doing etc, go for it! It may not be the quickest thing out there. But it will get you to the camp spot safe and sanely assuming you are within the warranty ratings.

Pulled a 3500lb boat with my 05 4WD tacoma. No problems just have to give a little more room for braking. I did add a transmission cooler.

John that is exactly what we did. We went from a Tundra and 23 ft Airstream to a Tacoma and a 16 ft Airstream. Our Tacoma fits our needs at this point in life.

By the way there is a YouTube video comparing the Tacoma to another truck towing the Ike Gauntlet. It covers towing a loaded trailer and braking.

Thank you for everyone's thoughtful comments. We are retiring and downsizing seems to be a theme - the Airstream Basecamp at 2500 lbs would seem to fit with the Tacoma.

Thanks for your help,
John

For occasional towing within the specs, it will do fine.

Hey! Please do not use common sense here LOL.

The OP needs an F450 at least.
Too many geezers, self appointed moderators, experts, and disappearing posts for me. Enjoy. How many times can the same thing be rehashed over and over?

My dad has a new Taco with the V6 and pulls the Gulf Stream vintage 19 ERD camper. He has pulled all across Florida and Georgia so not much in elevation until he gets to the mountains. Heโ€™s happy with his set up, Iโ€™m sure the tundra would do it better. He has not said anything about trading up or changing the truck out so thatโ€™s his take. Itโ€™s all up to how much your pulling, Iโ€™m sure the truck will be fine within itโ€™s pulling specs.
A truck, a camper, a few toys, but most importantly a wonderful family.

This, especially if you're thinking about a TT anywhere near that limit.

I would not pull more than 2-3000 lbs. with a Toyota Tacoma (and would not tow anything with it regularly). I had a Ford Ranger for years, it was a great little pickup, but it was absolutely horrible even with a tiny single axle trailer behind it, downright scary at times with others, like a 6x12 u haul trailer. A mini truck is not a tow vehicle. If you're buying a truck to pull a trailer, buy something that is made for towing, not backcountry adventures with a few passengers in the truck.

I think it would be fine for a pop-up, or some of the small teardrop/hybrid TTs. I think I would stay below 5000 pounds (and your hitch weight will likely limit you below that).

I would buy a Tundra if I planned on pulling anything other than a PUP or a utility trailer.

We tow 3500 Gvwr with 378 hitch weight 16 feet with 2018 Tacoma long cab short bed. We use sway control but no weight distribution. It tows well with plenty of power.
