We have had our TT listed on the local market for awhile. No luck so far.. What can I expect if I use it as a trade in from the dealer i'm buying from ?....Is it pretty much the same deal when you trade in a car ?
thanks..

Cars, boats, TTs it is always easier to trade in. You will make less because the dealer needs to make money on your old TT. You will gain because you have a ready market.

The dealer also knows what your trailer will sell for quickly and that is what he bases his price on.

What is your time, effort and ego worth to you?

Many try to sell it on their own first, knowing they can always trade it in with a dealer.

Good luck.

Depending on the value of the trade-in, you want to also consider the sales-tax benefit, if your state allows. If you have a trade worth $10,000, if you have a 5% state sales tax, you will save $500 when you go to get the tags, if you trade. If you sell it privately, you lose that sales tax "credit", so you must sell it for much more than $500 over the trade value to make it worth your time.

Every sale is different, as each market is different. I sold a 2-yr old TrailManor for $17k. I paid $20k for it new. Dealer would give me $10k for trade.

I received cash from the buyer (through Craigslist, listed for three weeks). I was fortunate that I had a rare item, and the right buyer found my ad. If your trailer is similar to others on the market, your benefit from selling privately will likely be much less than mine. Just the difference in market.

On our class A we agreed on a amount I would get when it sold. He kept the difference between the selling price and my cut. Very simple. Wireman

Dad traded his last trailer on a new one at the dealer. He got the difference price he wanted and was happy not to have to mess with CL or deadbeat buyers.

How do consignment lots work? There's an RV consignment "dealership" by my house. Could this be a viable option for the OP -- I mean, not the one by my house, but consignment lots in general?

A question to ask yourself would be: when do I want to sell? If you have the time and patience, of course you'll get more selling it privately. But, if you're also paying storage fees, insurance, financing interest, each month you wait will continue to eat into your profits.

One of the problems selling it on your own is the buyer. Does he have cash, does he have a loan and is pre approved.

Is yours paid for which plays a part. What year is it as banks only lend money up to certain years.

Try putting it on consignment if your not in a hurry. I did that with my class A. It took a couple months to sell but I got about 4K more than trading it in.

It's all about time & money. Your call. Wireman

If you have the ability to have the trailer on your property and can easily show it, I'd try selling privately first. In my situation, when I bought our Minnie we had moved to a 55+ community where I cannot keep the trailer on my property. So, I had to negotiate price of the new trailer and trade in value of my old trailer. I'm pretty sure I could have done a little better by selling privately, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do!

As you assumed, it is very similar to trading in at a car dealership. Whether it appears you got a lot for your trade in (see post above) the dealer always makes out very well in the end.

That is why the first thing they ask you whether you're buying a car or RV is if you have a trade. Go for it as it saves the hassle of selling it yourself and you get into a new rig much faster to boot.

The time element, my wife would not wait for the popup to sell on its own . It was listed for a month. She wanted a TT and we traded in. IN the end the dealer listed our pup for 1k more than he gave us and it was gone in 2 weeks. When I stopped by he did tell me , the financing is a huge part of why the tell from a dealer lot then private party.

Strangely I listed my pup for 8500$ and he gave us 8k. which was close.

Listed for 1k more doesn't mean he sold it for that.

Oh no, the dealer will give you ten times what it is worth and sell you a new one for less than he paid for it!!!!! In your dreams, right? LOL!!!!!!

Really, you are correct, it is very much like trading in a car. The dealer will give you less than it is worth retail, as he will have expenses in preparing it for sale, keeping it on the lot until sold, and then he has to make a profit on the sale of the used unit.

Trading in with a dealer will usually net you the lowest price for your TT.
Similar situation when you trade in a car.

IF your objective is to maximize what you can get for your TT - then private sale is the way to go.

I've done both, dealer and private and was happy on both occasions because my requirements were different. When I traded at the dealer, I was more interest in moveing into a new TT with the least amount of hassle. Trade in went smoothly and I drove in with my old TT and drove out with a new TT.
