Trailer Brakes - Basic things to check?

Good day all, I'm pulling out the TT for another week vacation soon and thought I'd pull each wheel off for an inspection on the brakes.

They have been working fine but for peace of mind I'd appreciate some tips on the basic procedure and what to look for once I pull the tires off the rig. Any pictures would be a great help as well! 🙂

For things to check, surf: http://dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/Service_Resources/Maintenance_Schedule_3-13.pdf

Note: While doing checks, simply "check them all".

To understand how to check (like magnet current flow, PAD thickness, etc. etc.) ,surf: http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/600-8K_Service_Manual_3-13/600-8K_Complete_Service_Manual_3-...

Note: Even if not using Dexter axle / hubs, following Dexter instructions works great.

If replacing axle or its brake wiring, I highly recommend removing factory linear wiring and replace with much better STAR wiring. re:

If wondering, I installed STAR design wiring under each of my trailers. Amazing before and after braking power. Especially when using 10 gauge wiring outside the axle (within PEX plumbing tubes and/or plastic wire loom).

Hope this helps….

Basic instructions.
You also want to make sure that all of the brake assembly pieces are intact and able to move freely. This includes the star adjustment wheel.

A couple things I look at are the brake lining. The lining will many times come loose from the shoe before it wears out. The puck magnets when new have dimples like a golf ball. If they are worn smooth it might be time to replace them although they are probably still.operating. Inspect and regrease the bearings. Reassemble and adjust lining. Good to go for another season.
