Trailer weight?

Just bought this 1968 Puma, and am climbing this steep learning curve...

In trying to find if my car can safely pull the thing, the weight of the PUP itself seems important. However, there aren’t any labels anywhere on this old thing! Even the title only gives a “max gross vehicle weight.”

Also, once i have this info, I know there’s got to be a sticky thread around here someplace that helps figure if my vehicle can tow the PUP. Searching didn’t help much, probably because I’m stuck to my phone for the day with no computer access....

Help?
  • Take it to the quarry scale and way it. You can replace axles and suspension with my modern 3500 pound trailer specs. Electric brakes, pa state inspection, and unknown if said "car" can tow at all.
  • If there's a DOT scale on a high way near you and it's closed, you can weigh it there as well. They usually leave them on and when you put weight on the scale, the display lights up.
  • Depends what model. But these were 750 to 1000 lb units..

  • Most "cars" now a days have a max tow weight of 1000 lbs and 100 lbs for tongue weight. Small/mid-size SUV/CUV are typically between 2000-3500 lbs max tow weight (10% of that for tongue weight). A loaded PUP is likely going to be in this range. If you have a mini-van that is heavily loaded, you will have to reduce the tow weight.

You have to get up to a full size SUV/CUV (like an Explorer) to get up to around 5000-6000 lbs.
