Traveling to Gettysburg, PA

Hi we are newbies at travel trailers, we have had our RV for about a year now. I was wanting any input on traveling from Dayton Ohio to Gettysburg, PA. I know that the Appalachian mountains start in Pennsylvania. Has anybody towed their travel trailer that way? How much of an incline is there? Is it a smooth ride or difficult to tow out that direction? Any help or advice would be appreciated .

For many years we have travelled to Gettysburg and totally enjoy it. I drive a 2010 F150 5.4l V8 towing a 25' Sunline, actual loaded weight is around 6,000#.

Pa Turnpike is good for towing Major mountain grades are the Allegheny Mountain and Sideling Hill, and neither will be that bad for your 5.0 V8. I just put it on cruise and let the truck do the work.

Travelling east on the Pa. turnpike I exit the turnpike at exit 201 at Rt. 997, and drive south to Rt. 30, then east into Gettysburg. this route is very driveable with my 25'/truck combo and not alot of traffic.

I would suggest our favorite campground there, being KOA Gettysburg. Yes, its a little pricey, but very well run, definitely worth it. We have stayed at several others in the area, but settled on this one.

Gettysburg is among our favorite places to go. Lots to see & do. Our CG of choice is Gettysburg Campground (not to be confused with Gettysburg Battlefield Resort CG). Drummer Boy lost our business years ago when the corporate crowd took over; Granite Hill was just plain hostile to us, for reasons I'll never understand.

We have visited the other CG's in the area - Round Top, Artillery Ridge and the KOA. The KOA is very nice, but we thought the sites to be small. Was not impressed with the other two.

Since you're coming from Dayton it is tempting to think I-70 to Rt. 30 to Gettysburg as it appears to be the most direct. IMHO Rt. 30 is slower and has some grades/curves that are not too pleasant. See the thread referenced by brirene. Even though the Rocky Mountains are higher and steeper, the Appalachians are impressive in their own right and often surprise folks driving through the first time.

My family and I made the trip to Gettysburg from Akron Ohio last year with a 4200lb used Innsbruck trailer that we bought to see how we liked the lifestyle. I have an F150 EB with standard towing package (7200lb). The trailer was very old, 1997, and we did not have a weight distribution hitch or anti-sway bars. While it did get pretty hilly, the truck did great, no power issues at all, and I did not notice any swaying. We just traded the old one in on a brand new one a few weeks ago (6200lb), and purchased a weight distribution hitch with the sway bars. With you trailer and your 5.0 F150 I don't think you will have any issues at all. However I do recommend a weight distribution hitch with that weight.

We have 2012 f150 5.0 , pulling a 2650 BH wilderness. Trailer weight dry is 5500.

What type of trailer do you have and what is your tow vehicle? I have traveled the turnpike (I76) many, many times from the valley Forge interchange to the Ohio state line. I might be able to better answer your question if you supply the above information. I think you will enjoy Gettysburg.

I've been out that way and back a number of times with and without trailers. There are a few big hills / long grades that will give you a workout - but not white knuckle scary stuff. 70 / 68 (depending on your route of choice) is pretty decent as long as you not running a weak tow rig / overly heavy TT.

And if you haven't already set plans for the Gettysburg stay, I'd highly recommend Artillery Ridge.
