I think THIS is the key: TC (and tents and truck shells and probably pop-up trailers) are for "outdoor people" ๐ If you don't enjoy being outdoors 90% of your awake day, you might like a more home-like RV form?
Ditto this.
It seems TCers are more about the outdoors than people with the rolling houses. IMHO:)

3K lb. plus truck camper hauling is inherently more complicated than towing a TT. That's a fact. Just look at the ongoing threads. Weight, tires, weight, wheels, stability, weight, tires, weight, stability.
None of my immediate friends has or ever had a truck camper. Either class C's or TT's or a truck. When asked why not a TC? Invariably, they've answered either too much work loading/unloading, too much cost or too small for what you pay.

We live in the Pacific Northwest and I can't think of any state or federal campground that won't allow a tent. Now there are some in Wyoming and one in Yellowstone that won't allow tents because of bears.
A truck with a topper or shell and no fabric sides would be allowed.
My wife and I started RVing in a truck topper she never complained but I think she liked the idea of every other night in a hotel.
Good luck what every you choose a trip west can be great fun.

I'm facing this myself.... 3 week trip to the Pacific Northwest planned, every day a new place. *I* want to take the pop-up TC; Ed wants to hotel it and put a shell on the truck. I bought a nice 6-person tent, because I'm determined to camp at least part of the time - you can't find hotels in the scenic places where we can camp. Next weekend we'll do a long weekend in the TC so he can see what a lovely experience it can be ๐ I'm not sure what is fueling his hesitation.....
Of course, not knowing if I'm in a tent or an RV makes a LOT of difference in making reservations. Some places will allow tents in RV sites - some won't. And a stunning amount of parks won't allow tents at all. Not sure if it's due to rowdies, or bears?

You hit it...we're too soft now to camp in the truck or in a tent. Our backs can't take a cot anymore and I hate to cook in the wind and rain. Face it, I'm spoiled.
...... :B
Have fun in your travels.
