Truck Camping With Cats

We're out in the TC mixing work and play. We've got our two cats with us; Kahlua, a brown 15 year old "senior cat", and Selina, a tortoise-shell who is technically still a kitten since she's only 11 months old. Kahlua has always been a very small cat. She might have weighed 6.5 lbs when she was in her prime, but now tips the scales at about 5 lbs. Selina came to us as a two-week old orphan that only weighed 6 oz's, and needed to be bottle fed.

This was her first taste of solid food.

She is now a full 10 lbs, and appears to have leveled off.

We had a little bed strapped to the center console that they would ride in, but as Selina grew, she was finding it harder and harder to stay within its bounds.

The boss recently bought a bigger bed, and I got it strapped to the console just before we left on this trip.

Selina appreciates the extra room.

The cats get along OK, for the most part. Selina wants to play more than Kahlua wants to, so we let them interact as much as possible but occasionally have to separate them just to give Kahlua some peace. Here's one of their good moments. It took a little encouragement from the boss for Kahlua to go along.

Being older, Kahlua likes to sleep even more than cats usually do. Selina gets impatient with her, and tries to stir things up a bit.

"Hey, whatcha doin Kahlua?"

"Are ya sleepin???"

"Yes I'm sleeping! Leave me alone you pest!"

Selina takes it all in stride though, and lets the boss take her out for a little leash training.

Our camp spot for the night.

Not if they are on a strictly raw chicken diet. On a raw chicken diet they have small poops and no smell.

I recently brought in a feral kitten that we had been feeding nothing but raw chicken. The kitten pooped in the same room as us and we didn't even realize it. And I am very sensitive to smells.

Seriously, a raw food diet makes all the difference in the world.

I've been reading that link and intend to look into the raw food diet. Thanks for that link.

I am more of a cat person than a dog person and had a house cat. I think about finding another one to adopt but there's one and only thing about owning a cat I can't stand....the litter box. I can't stand having it anywhere in the house, and I sure couldn't deal with it in a TC either.

I'm not a fan of litter boxes either but I have found relief.

These cat boxes combined with a raw meat diet make for a smell free environment.

Just the diet change alone is fantastic. I will never feed cats dry food again and only canned food in a pinch.

I was thinking there is no way I would TC with a cat, but I'm seriously considering it now. Those two changes make all the difference in the world.

We got back home yesterday afternoon in time for Christmas. We stayed in Texas instead of driving into NM, and had a very nice trip. From Caprock Canyons SP near Turkey, TX (home of Bob Wills) we drove down to San Angelo, then on to Sonora where we visited the Caverns of Sonora. The caverns are probably the most beautiful and unique I have ever experienced, and weโ€™ve been in quite a few. One noted speleologist put it this way: โ€œThe beauty of the caverns cannot be exaggerated. Not even by a Texan.โ€ If you are ever in the area, donโ€™t miss it!

We then drove around in the Hill Country for a few days. Hereโ€™s a few pictures of the cats enjoying the trip.

Dixxie spies a cardinal. She wants it bad!

Sharing the window seat at Guadalupe River SP.

Selina got to go for a walk on the rocks at Inks Lake SP.

Holy guacamole Catwoman! (Look at her tail) Who let that dog on the trail!

Heโ€™s gone, right? Whew!
(The dog was a good twenty yards away, and was never threatening towards us. Iโ€™m not even sure it knew a cat was nearby).

I'm going to have to look into getting a cat bag. Charlie is getting old. He still likes to get out and walk but you can tell he's slowing down. There are times we don't want to leave him unattended in the Truck Camper because of heat or other concerns. Could be fun to pack him along and walk him when we get where we're going.

I love a good story and your's is great. We took our 16 year old guy to Alaska and of course back. I did mention all of the ailments he had some time ago so not here but they are so cool to take with you that I'd do it again if we ever got another cat. Some nice photos by the Boss. Thanks.

Thanks for the videos Jeff, those are great! Wish Charlie a Merry Christmas for me.

We took our cats on a little walk along the canyon rim at Caprocks a few days ago. I was hoping Selina would want to walk some, but she just wanted me to carry her and not be in the bag. It was a little cold and breezy.

Kahlua was content to stay in her bag and just poke her head out. Dixxie is too small for a harness, so she stayed in the bag as well.

The park has a herd of about 100 bison that roam freely. They are descendants of a herd of southern plains bison that was gathered up by Charles Goodnight at his wifeโ€™s insistence. A living historic treasure. We gave them ample respect.

Did you say Truck Camping With Cats!

Here are some of Charlie's greatest hits.

Charlie's tour of the Truck Camper for traveling with cat's

Charlie's Diabetes and how we treat him traveling in the Truck Camper

Walking Charlie on leash at Beverly Beach State Park, Oregon Coast.

He knows the leash and harness mean outside. A reward better than food!

Iโ€™m not exactly sure how we got here, but our โ€œclowderโ€ of traveling cats has increased by one. We now have a five month old female calico kitten with us. Calicos are like tortoise shells in that they are almost always female (XX chromosome), so they have that in common. We named her โ€œDixxieโ€ as a reference to her genetics.

Dixxie has actually made the senior cat, Kahlua a lot happier. At 15 years old, Kahlua just wasnโ€™t interested in playing with Selina at all. Now that Selina and Dixxie are playing with each other, Kahlua doesn't have to constantly be on the lookout for being ambushed by Selina.

Weโ€™re out traveling with them now, getting one last trip in for the year. Spent the night in Caprock Canyons State Park, near Quitaque (kitty-quay) Texas. Weโ€™re going to do some hiking today, then spend a few days driving around in southern NM, or wherever the weather lets us go.

The two young cats love each otherโ€™s company.

That is one lucky kitty to have been rescued by you. We got to do the bottle feeding bit for a few weeks with Selina. We knew she was ready for solid food when she started chewing the nipple off the bottle :B

Camping cats are a special breed!
