Weight capacity for TT bumper

I have a 2005 Starcraft Homestead 24RKS and the bumper appears to be heavy duty 4 inch and welded to the frame. Does anyone know the average weight capacity of something like this? I saw another Starcraft with a similar setup and they had the hitch that bolts to the bumper. I was going to order the same thing and use a hitch rack that my generator will go on. The generator is only about 90 pounds and the rack maybe 50 or so. I would think the bumper could easily hold 500 pounds but I wanted opinions first.

TomG2--I appreciate that.

Acdii--yes, it folds up. I still have to install an eyebolt to hold it in position. It's been a nice addition to the TT.

That looks good, and is something I was thinking about at some point too. Nice to actually see what it would look like and that it works. Looks like you have it pinned so it can fold up against the back too.

Thanks for adding something positive to the forum.

The steel bumper on ours is less than 1/16th". That's why I modified a 24x60 cargo carrier to mount to the frame between the body and the bumper. It holds the spare, a bike, the sewer tote and the patio mat. There is a 1/8" gap between the carrier and the bumper, so the bumper doesn't carry any weight. I also put the mount-n-locks on just in case.

Yeah, I must drive on the smooth roads too. I've never seen a bike or TT spare tire with bumper attached on the side of the road either. But then, I haven't driven on all the roads yet. But I'm trying to. 🙂

You need to come over East a lot further, lots of rough roads in PA, WV, VA, NC and SC..

10 yrs ago, WV Turnpike road was so bad the mirror in the bathroom was partially ripped off the wall.. That road is still rough in places but they have made some improvements, can't say I have seen any other improvements on the other states roads I mentioned..

The newest rage is to mill a 1' to 2' wide strip of pavement for miles at a time, fill it in very uneven.. Do it in the center, and sides and call the road good..

Then you will get pieces of pavement popping out into massive craters BESIDE the new strips of pavement during the winter!

You guys are lucky to have properly paved smooth roads..

I think I'll pass. Driving thru Birmingham, AL or anywhere in Louisiana is about all I can stand.

Kansas roads must be a lot rougher than those in Illinois, although I find that hard to believe. Worked on the highways for forty years and never encountered bicycles or spare tires and their mounts from RV's on the roadway or in the ditches. Lots of other stuff. We got to where we could tell how many miles to McDonalds by the size of the drink cups along the highway. The larger ones went farther.

I have my generator mounted and locked to the rack. I got an outboard motor cover (BassPro) that fits the generator and then bungee a small cargo net over it to keep the cover from flapping in the wind going down the road. I have several locks securing the generator to the rack. It could be stolen but I'm not worried about it as the casual thief could never remove it. Someone would have to bring serious tools and have a good bit of time to get at it.

It and the generator do add tongue weight but as long as the tow vehicle and hitch can handle it there's not a problem. My 3000is weighs in around 130 pounds so lifting it up and down every time I want to use would be a real pain. Literally.

As far as mounting your generator on the trailer bumper while stationary I don't think you would have much problem. Most of the responses on here assumed your were wanting to transport the generator on the bumper. Why wouldn't you just place it on the ground while camped? Avoid the transmission of noise and vibration thru the trailer frame.

You guys convinced me. I cancelled the bumper mount hitch order.

The portable generator I bought is only 1 inch too tall to fit in the pass through. It would be nice to get it in there but not sure I want to modify the handles to make it fit. I will look at options.

I use one of these for my 3K Honda generator. Works great as long as you can tolerate the increased tongue weight.

Thats actually not too bad an idea, but it is an additional 65# on the tongue. For transporting, mine would be in the bed of my truck, but for operating, I was thinking of one of those folding racks on the tail, fold it down and put the genny on that.
