- vacuumbedExplorerI thought it would be fun to have a 5.7 diesel GM, but I can't imagine having it replace my modern 2004 Cadillac Seville with the Northstar. Wait a minute, the Northstar is considered junk too! :E
I guess I'm not known on this board for choosing reliable engines. :B:B:B - Turtle_n_PeepsExplorerLooks like the car that's in my driveway right now. :E 82 Caddie at 30 MPG baby and waste oil for free!
I'll be like those other brand people and use the same logic that own a diesel that is .3 liters bigger. Mine has been a great engine and maintenance is the key. :B They get a bad rap from people that turn their pumps up. :B
So all you people stop bashing this engine because they are great engines because my has been great! :B
PS it's funny that the amount of head bolts that hold my heads on are the same amount as that other brand. :W - TvovExplorer IIA friend's Dad back then had an Oldsmobile Toronado diesel. He pulled the diesel and had a gas 350 put in, and it ran great. I still remember it as one of the most comfortable cars I've ever been in.
For years I didn't believe my friend when he said the car originally had a diesel! - buckyExplorer III lived in western NC in the early 80s and had one of those turds for a company car. Might as well have walked up some of those hills.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerYep GM single handedly killed the diesel car market in the USA with that joke. Hope the clown that decided it was a good idea to take an Oldsmobile 350 V8 gas engine and change it into a diesel got fired and never had the opportunity to work again.
Don - thomasmnileExplorerMy late father had a 1979 Olds 98 Regency Brougham diesel he bought from a friend. Was amazing they were still friends after the sale........:B

I want one! :B Clicky
NO YOU DON'T :w
Actually ours was a 1979 Eleganti. What a POC. That engine was in the shop monthly, I kid you not. And that model came with true spoke wheels, another failure. I know why this one had the cheap caps put on. I had to do the same thing as the true wire wheels looked great, they needed to be tuned as much as a piano.
We finally put like a 403? old's engine into it which took out the tranny within a year :S
Other than that it was a sweet car. Interior was great, windows worked great, radio worked great. I really loved the car, just hated the power train. - gboppExplorerI was one of the lucky people.
I had an 80 Bonneville with the dreaded diesel.
It was a great car, I bought it used.
The engine never gave us any problems. - azrvingExplorerOh my god. I remember that fiasco well.
- Ron3rdExplorer IIIYep, I remember GM's "bad old days".
