In my search for a truck it seems like any 2015-2016 F350 SRW is gone the day it hits the lot. I did find a very nice lower mileage in great shape but the salesmen told me it had the DEF delete done. From what I understand it removes all the mechanical parts for the DEF and re-programs the computer. He says it's a service his shop offers and has become fairly popular. Claims to still pass emissions etc but offers better MPG and HP, but frankly, it makes me nervous. I feel like I'd rather have a stock truck. I called my mechanic and he didn't know much about it. Is this something to stay away from?

Ford's policy is to not allow warranty work on trucks without intact emissions.Removing emissions equipment is a federal offense, and that dealer is a risk of high fines for performing that service. There's little risk to you (other than the aforementioned warranty implications) unless you fail to disclose the modifications when you sell.I doubt you'd ever get hassled for it in NC, but if you moved to CA, you'd have a very difficult time registering it.

Unless you have to move to an area with emission inspections, you would probably be better off not returning it to stock. Returning it to stock might cost thousands. If the delete was done correctly it should not affect reliability, in fact there will be less things to fail. A Ford dealer probably won't work on it so you'll want to find an independent shop that will.

I doubt it will pass emissions, the whole purpose of DEF is to meet NOx limits.

Generally I would pass. Could check what your Ford dealer would charge to reinstall the delete. Add 20% and deduct from the price you would pay unmodified.

It has over 100,000 miles? That's how long the engine warranty is, and I think the emissions warranty is 150,000 miles If you buy a 6.7L without an engine or emissions warranty, do you have the $11,000 on hand in case your CP4 fuel pump self-destructs?

It's not clear to me at all why deleting DEF would improve mileage or HP.

And my duramax with DEF and more HP gets better highway mpg unloaded by several mpg than the one I had w/o DEF.

DEF just injects urea into the exhaust stream to change NOx into N2 and O2. It's a process that has been used for decades with little problem in stationary power plants to clean up exhaust.

I'll keep mine intact.
