What size A/C would you buy, and where would you mount it?

I just picked up a 2004 Fleetwood Redwood folding trailer. It's in excellent condition but the only draw back is no A/C. Too hot in Okla. for anything without air. I do have a 12,000 btu portable A/C that works well, but it's in the way.
So, my question is if you decided to add a roof top A/C, what size would you get, 13.5k btu, or 15k btu? and where on the roof would you mount? Also, any thoughts on how to run the electrical wiring?
thanks,
Geo.
  • There should be 4 plugs in the ceiling about 14" apart marking the location of where the A/C should be mounted. Also, make sure you have the cross-braces mounted to the underside of your roof to support the added weight. Fleetwood had SPECIFIC instructions for cutting the roof and mounting the unit as well as a poorly designed mounting kit. Make sure to follow these instructions carefully, especially cutting the hole if you have a Filon roof.

FWIW, if you have a Filon roof as I have, I would NOT add an A/C at all. Even following instructions roof cracks can still develop. Fleetwood stopped making and supporting PUP's a long time ago but the installation kit is still available somewhere online.

  • I second the pugs. If you camp in direct sun you will cook in the bunkends even with a 15 AC. Gizmos on over the bunkends and you can actually enjoy laying in the tent end during 90s and direct sun with no/ac.
  • I suggest that you get a set of PUGS (pop-up gizmnos) that fit over the bunk ends and get some Reflectix from Home Depot/Lowes and cut it to fit inside the bunk ends in between the screens and canvas flaps.
  • Contact the manufacturer for placement. It will have to be properly supported to accomplish correctly.
  • No roof top vent, so I would need to cut to fit. Just want to make sure I cut in the right place.
  • If you ever boondock you can run a 9000 BTU unit with a Honda 2K, so there is that to think about too. In many cases the A/C units have been prewired into the same place as a 12 volt fan is currently. Check either the 120 volt panel for unused wires, or it may be wired and just wire nutted off in the existing fan space.
