What to look for in purchase and past water damage

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a travel trailer. There is one fairly close to me that we like, a 2005 Keystone Outback 25RSS. The buyer I'm pretty sure is truthful, as I know someone who I trust who says he is a good guy, and has disclosed when he purchased it 4 years ago, he was told there had been leak before, that was repaired. He has had no leaks in 4 years. There is some slight water damage evidence in the cabinet of the bunkhouse, that has apparently not changed in 4 years.

There is, what appears to be a bit of bubbling on the front of the trailer, which matches where the water leak would have been.

I'm really trying to figure out if there is anything I need to look at for to tell me if this repair is good, if this is a good purchase, etc. The price appears fair, and the rest of the camper is in great shape. I'm attaching a photo of what we see in the online photo.
  • Just because it had some water damage doesn't mean it is still leaking, it also doesn't mean it won't leak again or in another spot. I have a camper that I bought with a leak. I thought I did my due diligence and checked it thoroughly, with a moisture meter. (they don't work very good on RV walls). I found the leak on a rainy camp trip the first fall I owned it. It took a repair shop multiple tries and a couple grand to stop the leak and repair anything that got we, although not very wet and never had mold or rot. I would say now, a couple years later, that it does not leak and there is very little if any evidence that it did leak. There are a couple places on the exterior wall where I believe there is some delamination, but that was due to the repair process. As they pulled things apart, I didn't want to pay to have the entire wall removed, so they did what they could.

Mine is a 2007, which I have had for a about 4 years now. The price was very good, so even with the repair cost, I got a good price on the unit. If it is repaired correctly, and not leaking, then there is no reason to think it will leak again any more than any other spot on the horrible construction of an RV.

But, like someone else said, do what I did not do, and hire an RV Inspector to look more thoroughly than the average person could. OR, take it to a place that does RV repairs and have them go through it. The couple hundred bucks you pay now could save you a lot later. If the person selling won't let you do those things, then don't buy it and move on.
  • You should include the price in your post.
A lot depends on how skilled you are. There are bunches of people who are not afraid of a little water damage, or even a lot of it, if the price is right.
Mine had a leak in a skylight that did zero damage.
I have noticed quite a few Outbacks that have a wrinkled cap.
Get a moisture meter and check all over.
Mold can be a real pain to get rid off, if there is any.
    Good luck.

It already has delamination? Run. There are better buys awaiting you. You did the right thing, in asking this forum for advice. You might want to see if there is a seasoned RV guy near your location when you find that perfect trailer. See in a six pack will coax him into looking the trailer over with you. Two heads are better than one.
  • I second looking for one with no water damage. At 15 years old, with damage they should be giving it away, not selling it. I would not buy it.
  • “he was told there had been leak before, that was repaired.”

“Truth” isn’t the issue. You know about a leak. Was it repaired properly? Any mold? This isn’t the TT you should buy. Also, it’s fifteen years old. Roof maintenance every year? Says who?
  • Hook up a water sprinkler on the roof. THEN WAIT 60 minutes. If he refuses RUN.
  • so hire a rv inpector to check it out. just might be me,BUT in I see water marks I run, theres no way to tell how bad it is without taking it apart, the rest is just somdodies guess. sealing with claucking is not a repair.
