What we got

After weeks of dithering, we finally did it yesterday. We were looking at Ram 1500s and Ford F-150s, despite really wanting a diesel, but we just couldn't justify the size of the 2500s and F-250s for our needs. We did find a new Ram 1500 that we really liked, but the cargo numbers just weren't working for us and it was pretty expensive.

So we got a 2014 Ford F-150 XLT, dark red metalic.
4x4
3.5L V6 Ecoboost
3.73 axle ratio
Crew cab
Cargo capacity 1441, per the door tag
GVWR 7200
Factory tow package

We drove one with the off-road package, which would have allowed us to tow 9600#, among other things, but didn't like the ride or the feel of the seats. So this one doesn't have those items, but it has a somewhat stiffened suspension as part of the tow package.

We downloaded a table from the web that shows that outfitted as it is, with that axle ratio, it's "real" towing capacity is 9600, but since we top out at about 6000#, that's not a concern.

Anyway, that's what we have. It's gigantic and doesn't have a helper handle in the driver's door, so getting in is a good show for anyone watching me, but I think it'll work well for us.

I'd post a picture, but can't figure out how to do so. (I asked the Admin. to pin that information to the top of the thread list, but it hasn't happened yet.)

Congratulations Margaret, great choice. You'll love it. An EcoBoost was kinda on the top of my list when we bought a new truck in '13, but I wanted the extra payload, so ended up with an F250, which we love. Good luck, and have fun!

I'm glad you finally found something that suits you. You'll have to let us know how it works for you after your first tow with it.

I don't get Ram's strategy with half tons.
I expect it will take them several years (they never change things fast) and they will figure out they're losing sales to rigs that can haul something.

We were looking at a 2015 Ram 1500 4x4 SLT, but after subtracting our heavy hitch and adding running boards at 150# for two, we were left with 270# for ourselves. I know I need to lose about 30 lbs., but we can't wait that long! Pity, because we liked it, but we couldn't chance it.

To the person who suggested that we not tow for the first 1000 miles, we have to take the trailer down to the dealer on 2/9 for some warranty work - three of the six windows were damaged in installation and have to be replaced because they don't open - so we'll have to tow it down. But we go slowly.

You've been an English-user since childhood and don't know the difference between "your" and "you're"?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Well done my lady, well done.

Oh, and congrats on the truck. I imagine you'll be plenty pleased with the towing performance of your F-150 ecoboost. Enjoy.

And when you are getting in on the driver side, use the steering wheel, it makes a great handle for the shorter folk.

I know you went through the process of deciding with a lot of questions here. Nice job on educating yourself. I still think Ford is producing the best all around pick up and you made a good choice for your needs.

Congrats on the new truck!
Ford recommends driving it for 1,000 miles before towing (to seat the rear end gears.)
Hopefully you'll enjoy towing with it as much as I do with my EB.

Congrats on the new truck! Just wait until you climb your first big hill towing your trailer. You are going to be very impressed with the power of the ecoboost. I guarantee you will have a smile from ear to ear. I towed our 2012 Outback(33' & 7800lbs) for 3 seasons and thousands of miles without any issues. I would lockout 6th gear, set the cruise control on 62mph and it would climb 6-7% grades in 5th gear at 2200 rpms.
Best of luck with it!
