Which Pickup, to first generate over 1000 ft. lbs. torque ?

Bingo! It's torque management software that makes these high numbers possible. If all 850 ft./lb of torque were available in low gear right off idle something would break or the frame would twist. I imagine that's why the manual transmission Ram pickups have much lower hp and torque ratings. It's nothing new, in OTR trucks it's common for a higher hp rating to be available only when cruise control is engaged. If 500 hp/1000 torque is ever available, it's very possible that this power rating would only be available in the top 3 gears, at freeway speeds and for short periods of time.

GM is lower on torque, but not hp. Both are important numbers and with transmission and engine controls the Duramax is no slouch, I'm not sure why people think torque is all that matters??

I'm a big torque fan, but that's only one part of getting a load up a hill. Once your moving hp is more important, which is why on a flat tq curve a engine cannot hold 1800 rpms up a hill but they can hold 2200 with the same torque.

Ram does not claim to have the highest HP. They have the lowest of the three.

I bet all three are around 500/1000 within 5 years.

It's pretty easy to make the power, and Cummins already has a 542/1250 marine 6.7. Marines are different but you should see the power curve, it jumps very fast at 1800.

To be honest, I wonder how much is really "needed". At some point the added power just isn't really used.

My truck is making 415/850 to the ground, which is about 490/1000 at the crank. I pull better mileage than a stock truck, with about 1,000lbs more "empty" weight too. Yesterday I pulled a 6% grade at 55 and didn't break 60% load at 19-20K combined. That's not too heavy, but stil not working the truck very hard. I am not sure I meet emissions thou :-)

Lemme splain something to you Lucy. My 98 24V was custom programmed by Mark Chapple (Retired Cummins performance engineer) of TST Products as his first upgrade to the new electronics engines. Of course he was shut down on that avenue as Cummins said their programming was proprietary and owned by them alone. So back to the drawing board he comes out later with a power added box (forget the name). So I go to his shop and get it installed and ask what about the previous program. He says I am lucky, I get power on top of power. How much? He estimates 900LBS torque (he knows his stuff). Says I will fry tranny very quickly if I turn it up too much. Boy was he spot on. Tranny died very quickly and I had one built (plug for Tim Moy Transmissions, Lutz FL) that could handle the power.

I say all that to say this. My 98 would twist the frame a little when hard on the pedal. You could tell when letting off and it would jerk to the right (or left, I can't remember) I had a deleted mild tune 08 and now have a 14 with like a supposed 800LBS torque. Neither truck is even close to the 98. These are all brochure numbers and have nothing to do with real world towing. I firmly believe my 97 12V could tow as well as my 14.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Cummins and my new truck. Would rather have a low RPM high torque bus engine though. Next time your on a bus listen to the engine and feel how the bus accelerates. Problem with an engine tuned like that is the HP numbers would kill sales.

!000 lbft of torque is just around the corner. I don't think we will ever see 900 horsepower in a small wheel driven pickup truck. In order for an engine that only produces 1000 lb ft of torque to make 900 hp it would have to run at least 4727 rpm. Kind of fast for a diesel but I guess you never know.
