Who's hitting the road this summer?

With all of the virus stuff, I am certain we are all tired of being stuck at home by now. I've been stir crazy for months now and ready to hot the road. In the midst of planning my own summer time road trip with the family, I've been wondering what type of crowds I should expect at National Parks and campgrounds. My initial thought was it would be a low traffic season with people wanting to avoid others but I've started to hear some rumours that places are already very busy after reopening.

So, how many of you are looking at traveling this summer and what changes are you making because of the virus / restrictions?

What common facilities are you referring to?

It is past time to get rid of these things. There is plenty of literature showing that they disperse germs into the air and throughout the bathrooms. In spite of that they have been in widespread use because of the low maintenance as opposed to filling paper towel dispensers and removing the paper waste.

With paper towels you also have a way to open the door on your way out of the bathroom to compensate for the large number of people who use the bathrooms and never even wash their hands.

Funny comparing camping to traveling.
On our 260 miles trip to Lake Powell, we crossed state line 5 times.
But going to regural campground brings the concerns about using common facilities. The big campground we stayed at had huge office with TV monitor giving tips how to protect yourself from virus.
1 of the tips was to wash your hands and use paper towel to open the door.

I don't "travel", I just go camping and I'm getting ready for another camping trip.

Figured I had better wash the truck and camper before heading out.

Slow traffic on the forum makes me wonder if Adamis and me are the only members who made some travels this season.
I check boat forum on other hand and in 2 days it generates 3-4 pages of new replies.
Anyway, for those who like pictures, here is couple from our last weekend. (zoom onto campers at the bottom of Horseshoe Bend.)
In the week we spend at Powell Lake, the new cases of coronavirus in Las Vegas quadrupled, so looks like going into remote locations is the only way to go this season.

Since I come to the lake with friends driving cars, we decided to move to nearby RV park with paved roads.
In the mean time we observe other drivers going out of campground and figured out the best way is to go the loop who had 3 spots with soft dust 50-150' long.
So walking the road couple of times we could figure out the best path, so with my camper loaded, I was able to go up to main road with my truck "just fine".
It is "just" becouse keeping the speed at sand road I could see camper nose "in line of view" . Switching to 1 manual gear sure makes the difference.
Bottom line, me with camper and friend with FWD SUV were able to pull up just fine, although with adrenaline at high level.

With 2wd and an empty truck bed, you could only do better if you aired the tires down more. Otherwise, you have to carry more weight in the back so the front does not become an anchor.

If it only cost you $40 to get pulled out, you were lucky that someone was there and you did not have call a tow service. I could see one tug costing you $200...

You might or might not have made it with 4WD in those conditions. Keep having fun!

OH YEAH !!!.

Campground has plenty of participants, but the National Park Service who SUPPOSE to manage the campground was shut down for last 3 months, meaning did nothing and now they continue to do so.
There is no host, no ranger that you can see, not gate guard.
They open electronic kiosk, where you can leave your money, but all campground roads are having deep sand that makes even all SUV stuck.
The only vehicles who can make it to the beach are 4WD pickups with mud tires.
2nd time in 3 years of owning this truck I had to pay for the rope, what might make comment to other topics if saving $40 in 3 years is worth the cost of 4WD.
So there is a limit how much LSD can help.

At the height of outbreaks we stayed within a fuel tank full of our home and brought everything with us but still continued to travel. This allowed us to isolate but not have to stay in place.

Last weekend was our first time out to a restaurant for chowder and beer. We now spend money in visiting areas but still are careful about keeping things clean and distancing ourselves from groups.

This weekend, we will spend more time around people but with caution. It is time to engage with humanity again...

Just got on the road Monday for a family campout with my kids in the E Sierra. Usually do 5 to 6 months ramblin', but probably only 3 to 4 this year with a late start and this virus mess. Probably do more boondocking vs. usual USFS campgrounds. Safe travels to all.
