the simple answer is BECAUSE THEY CAN or WANT. I have a small 19' trailer that will sleep 5. You certainly aren't going to dance in there. My house is way more comfortable than my trailer so when i take it out i don't want to sit in the trailer. I see these monsters on the road 35-40' with sometimes with 2 people but never more 5. In fact I spent a week on the rd recently and didn't see more than 4 people per trailer. This post isn't directed at people who live on the road with their trailer.
We started with a 27' TT with just one tiny slide in the back for the kids' two bunks. Our first trip was from California to Virginia in December, with one 10 year old and a 1 year old. That trailer was just big enough for us, considering the galley/dinette area didn't have a slide.
When we moved back to CA in the spring of 2014, we spent a total of 6 weeks from address to address, this time with the addition of a 9 month old. We had some great adventures visiting Niagara Falls, Lake Michigan, Chicago, The Mall of America, Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Tetons, and Tahoe along the way, but we were WAAAAAY tired of the space to crew ratio by the end of the trip.
We now have a 35'2" TT with a bunkhouse, east-west configuration for the master suite, a big slide in the galley/dinette area, and another rugrat on the way. When we head back east again after my assignment out here, we'll have 6 total. I'd go bigger if I could, but I'm already pushing the 65' length limit with my long bed crew cab + trailer :B
