Could you and would you tow a Coachman Freedom Express 192RBS
392 lbs. Hitch Weight
3852 lbs. UVW
5900 lbs. GVWR
2048 lbs. CCC
22' 6" Length
with this vehicle ? 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6-liter V6 - 290 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, tow cap of 5000 pounds , 5 speed trans.
It's our current tow vehicle for our PUP and we do plan on buying a 1/2 ton in several years but we'd like to get a TT sooner if this is doable with our Jeep . There is just the two of us and we'd only be travelling around Southern Ontario a few times a year for now . Thanks for any input

Yes it's doable. The JGC can tow up to 7000#. Get a good true sway control hitch like the Hensley. PM if you have questions.

The 8 cyl. can tow 7000 lb. mine only 5000

We're both a little off:

The 3.6L can tow:

I would look at it from another way. This weekend we had solid 25 mph winds with gusts to 35-40 from the west. Coming home on a north / south freeway was hold up after hold up from RV's that are big and long getting pushed and swaying side to side. Each person I passed had a death grip on the wheel and most were in a Expedition, 1/2 ton, Suburban type vehicle.

Another thought is we went to yellowstone this year and drove through the mountains. I'm glad I wasn't towing anything. You may say I would never go in the mountains however we fell in love with the place and will be going back yearly.

Both of the above is why I'm looking to buy a shorter trailer for my 1/2 ton.

Point being on a nice sunny cool day it may pull it but now add in the heat, high winds etc and think about how much fun you would be having.

I tow a 29' TT with a 2013 Grand Cherokee. The TT is 4735 dry with a GVWR of 6500 lbs. We have a 5.7L Hemi, but I believe the V6 would do OK as well. The TT tows just fine with the GC. I use a WD hitch with Sway Control and a Prodigy Brake Controller. I have towed up to 70 mph with no problem. Passing semis on a two lane does not even phase it. Not a bit of sway. My GC is rated for a little over 7000 lbs. There is only 2 of us in the car. Based upon my experience so far, I believe I could safely tow much more than the vehicle is rated for. The main thing is that I drive like I am towing a 7000 lb vehicle. I have seen many RVer's towing at 70-80 with a TT or fifth wheel. I rarely exceed 65 mph. I have had to stop quickly, not necessarily a panic stop, with no drama. I don't think you will have any problem with the proper hitch and sway control.

I have the same Jeep, just a 2014.

Had a trailer with similar weights and sizes.

Short answer - nope.. I didn't do it and I wouldn't do it. Wouldn't feel comfortable.

But, if you want to live by your moniker, well I say go for it.

Jeep payload ratings vary considerably, depending on your particular model's trim, from a rather meagre 1130 lbs to a still not so swell 1350 lbs.

2012 Jeep Payload Ratings

My own 2014 192RBS which weighs a couple hundred less than new versions runs ~ 4600 lbs loaded and ready to camp, with an average gross tongue weight of 600 to 625 lbs, so payload (or more correctly lack thereof) will be your major limiting factor.

The question is, will it carry the tongue weight plus the WD hitch (a couple hundred pounds) and have anything left for passengers and cargo? And most importantly, will the Jeep be in control, or will the tail wag the dog? I think you'll be very close if not over your weight limits, and you'll have a miserable time on a windy day, or in bad weather, or heavy traffic, or on a bad road. The wind resistance of the TT is a significant factor, especially when compared to a PUP.

The problem with this setup, is the short wheel base on the JGC.

can be done. wont be the most pleasant tow. payload will be your limiting factor. i used to tow my prowler 19E with a WJ and did ok but it was not comfortable like my f150 and i had to pay attention when packing nor could i take extra gear or people. My WJ had the 4.7 and solid axles with a bit higher numbers but i believe the newer "jeeps" have a bit more payload.
