A few things to note about the Powerstroke fuel filter/system:
1. There's an updated, THUMB screw style HFCM drain plug (been available for a number of years now). No allen key, diesel fuel bath necessary anymore. updated water fuel separator plug 6.0 powerstroke
PSDparts.com is the lowest price I've found at around $12. I'm sure you can get em on ebay cheap too. It's a no brainer and not worth the fight and mess otherwise.
2. When removing the filter cap, use an extra long ratchet extension that will reach past the crossmember. You're now in much better position for leverage and out of the way of falling fuel.
3. Yes. Only Motorcraft or International filters should be used if you want to avoid premature injector failure. Should be able to get 200+K miles out of a set of stock injectors if the recommended filters are used and maintenance is done.
4. Adding cetane booster/fuel conditioner to every tank is also necessary to get maximum fuel pump/injector life.
This job, realistically, should be no more than 10 min and an easy one, if you have the right tools and method.
