All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: 2500HD or 3500HDThe 2500 runs out of payload WAY to quickly. My 2500 CCSB Denali had 2200-2300 lbs capacity.load 400# of people/dogs and your left with 1900#. Not much left for hitch and pin weight, firewood, etc. Airbags will cost more than any additional cost of the 1 ton. The 20" wheels and tires on the 2500 aren't available on the 3500 because they don't have the necessary weight capacity so now your double screwed so add the cost of upgrading wheels/tires to the cost of airbags. And the law will still look at it as a 2500 no matter what you do to it and in their eyes overloaded is overloaded. My 3500hd Denali CCLB doesn't ride any worse than the 2500 because it's not sitting on the overload springs when empty so no worries there. Save yourself some future grief and get the 3500 so that you have room for growth with any future RV's. I'm already wishing that I'd gone dually when I upgraded to my 3500HD. BTW, I LOVE my GMC!Re: 265/70/18 275/70/18I have a 2016 GMC 3500HD and am considering 285/65-18's. You get the same small increase in load rating but the overall tire height is the same as the stock size. It is a nice little increase in width, and everything I've read says it should fit without problem.Re: 2003 duramax vs 2015 dmaxI use about a gallon of DEF per 1000 miles. When the warning comes on I go to WalMart and grab a 2.5 gallon jug for $12 and I'm good to go. Pretty much a non issue. My truck is a CCLB, weighs 8000 lbs. and i easily get 18-20 mpg empty and 10-11 towing on flat ground. If that is a fuel economy penalty over the older trucks,I'll take the power.Re: Ford Super Duty 6.2 Super Ike Gauntlet PullIn one way it's not a very good comparison due to the altitude they're at. The turbo's compensate a lot for the thinner air at altitude while the naturally aspirated motors, like the 6.2, are at a real disadvantage. They do some great tests, but how many of us spend much, or any, time at 10,000-11,000 feet? I'd love to see this same, or a similar test, done at more realistic altitudes and maybe in the heat of summer instead of the cold of winter.Re: 2003 duramax vs 2015 dmaxA buddy of mine with an '02 F250 is going thru the same kind of thing as you. 200,000 miles, the truck is not wore out, but is having A LOT of age related issues. He loves it and is determined to keep it, but he's no mechanic and between what he has been offered and what he's poured into it in just the last year would pay for more than half of a new one. I have a 2016 3500HD and feel the power, fit and finish, and upgrades are light years ahead of yours. 97 more HP and 245 lb-ft. more torque. A 6 speed tranny vs 5(?) speed, exhaust brake (an incredibly wonderful thing) stronger frame, bigger brakes and wheels. I pull a 14,000 lb fith wheel and the truck does not struggle. At all. Don't mean to demean the older trucks at all,but my opinion is, if you can afford it, get a newer one. And there are several small upgrades done over the model years you mentioned, so get as new as you can.Parking the truck in San FranciscoIn a couple weeks my wife and I are keeping our 10 year old grandson over spring break and taking our fiver to Petaluma. Among our excursions will be a day trip to S. F. and I'm a little nervous about parking my crew cab long bed pickup. It's been many years since I've been there and have no idea what kind of parking might be available. We'll probably take him to the usual spots like the Wharf or Pier 39 and I'd appreciate any helpful suggestions.Re: Route from I-5 to Oregon Coast cpaulsen wrote: mamasmax wrote: Having just done this trip-I'm currently in Lincoln City-I can say from personal experience that it takes about the same amount of time to go the I-5 to 199 to 101 route as it does 299 from Redding to the same point even though it's some 60 miles further. 299 is not really the problem, it's not really much different from 199. It's that much of 101 from Crescent City to the Oregon border absolutely sucks. Much of it is steep, narrow, twisty, and the poor road surface just beats you to death. If he has the time, take 199 from I-5 to 101. It's a beautiful drive. 101 from Crescent City to Brookings is only about 25 miles and the road is almost flat. My bad. I meant to say from the 299/101 junction to Crescent CityRe: Route from I-5 to Oregon CoastHaving just done this trip-I'm currently in Lincoln City-I can say from personal experience that it takes about the same amount of time to go the I-5 to 199 to 101 route as it does 299 from Redding to the same point even though it's some 60 miles further. 299 is not really the problem, it's not really much different from 199. Are there certain characteristics that make one tire more desirable than another or will any LT tire be fine? My fiver maxes out at 12,000 lbs. loaded so I don't need load range G tires. For that matter, does it even make sense to make that change and instead go with a top of the line trailer tire instead?Re: 2015 Chevy 2500HD bed heightI replaced my 2013 GMC 2500HD with a new 2015 2500 HD 2 months ago. Same configuration right down to the rims and tires and I noticed the '15 looked to be maybe 2 inches taller at the rear of the bed. I had to adjust my hitch down to get the trailer level, but I still have plenty of clearance. I mentioned this in a Duramax forum and it seemed as if I was the only one on the forum who'd noticed. 'Kinda nice to see someone else has noticed. BTW, I pull a '14 Jayco Eagle.
