Dead Horse Point is a must see! We got some great photos, both of the canyon... as well as the milky way.Re: Big BendWe were down there two years ago during Christmas. We spent a few days on the east side at the Stillwell Store (just outside the park). .. as well as Maverick Ranch on the west side. Both had full hookups and we enjoyed them both. Stillwell Store is amazingly remote...Re: Santa Fe, NM RV Parks and To-Do'sIn Santa Fe we have stayed at the KOA as well as Santa Fe Skies... I'd probably go with the KOA out of those... In the Taos, Red River area: We stayed at Angel Fire RV Resort.. If you need full hookups: this is about as good as it gets. We loved it. We also stayed at Elephant Rock, which is a NFS campground just a bit west of Red River. No hookups, but it great! Happy Camping!Re: Rest Area / Truck Stop EtiquetteI have Cracker Barrels filed next to Camping World... none of my money going there...Re: Rest Area / Truck Stop EtiquetteWell, as the original poster of this thread... I am always impressed not only with the responses but by the unsolicited advice that is given... It's like eating chicken, you pick the meat off, and leave the bones on the plate. However, I did get a very good "piece of meat" from this thread (in addition to the advice pertaining to the original questions). And that is the recommendation to use Campendium.com. I have already changed one of my planned stops so that I wont be using the Pilot Truck stop, but rather staying in a free RV lot at one of the Casinios on my route. I still plan for two overnight stops at Walmarts along the way... but both allow RV parking, and I am confident I will be able to find a suitable spot out of the way that will meet my needs just fine. In the mean time I am adding Campendium to my list of resources along with RVParkReviews, RVParky, and of course... this forum. Thanks Again!Re: Rest Area / Truck Stop EtiquetteI work from wherever I am via the internet. So, if I pull into a campground at say 9 PM... and get up the following day and work til 4 PM... that would be two days I'd have to pay for a camping spot since I would be departing well after checkout time. Then drive from 5 til 9 or 10 PM again and repeat..... So, in the process of being on the road for 3 night I'd have to pay for 6 nights camping. However: I can pull into a WalMart... get some sleep... then get up and work from my camper until mid-afternoon or so... then get on the road.... In the process of doing that... between fuel, food, and miscellaneous items I would probably spend at least a hundred bucks or so at the WalMart, truckstop, or wherever I stay... So everybody wins. I'm not looking for a free ride at all.. just practical thriftiness... I have a small honda generator for any daytime power needs... won't be running at all at night (won't need AC that time of year)... and any incidental noise I hear from the highway or nearby trucks is just the price you pay... I do appreciate all the feedback and ideas!Re: Rest Area / Truck Stop EtiquetteYes, our plans don't include any over-nights at a rest area. I just wanted to get an idea about what other folks thought. I plan on staying out of the way as best I can, and that definitely includes parking on the perimeter. Thanks for all the quick responses.Rest Area / Truck Stop EtiquetteWe will be heading out for a month-long trip in the near future. My itinerary calls for a couple of nights at Walmart, and a Pilot Truck stop on the way. I have checked that the WalMarts we plan to stop at do allow overnight parking. The Pilot truck stop has overnight RV spots as well as RV gas lanes. But, in reading other posts I am seeing stuff like "Don't put out your slide", "Don't park in the overnight truck lanes", "Never sleep at a rest area".... etc... Now I have enough sense not to drag out the lawn chairs and gather firewood... But I do have to put my slide out in order to access my bedroom... So... 1. Has anyone stayed overnight at Pilot Trucks Stop? Are the RV parking spots along side the 18 wheeler spots? 2. Assuming my slide does not extend to an adjacent spot, or impeded normal driving space... Whats wrong with sleeping at a rest area? TIA!Re: Big Bend Rio Grande Village No ReservationsYou'll enjoy Stillwell. Be sure and drive to the end of the road... I think if you look up "middle of nowhere" there will be a picture of Stillwell. We plan on going back some day.Re: Yellowstone with no hookups? It it's really cold I carry a "Mr Heater Buddy Portable" (they sell them at WalMart). It is safe for indoors and uses the propane canisters. It is a great backup plan in case I run out of propane, or run out of battery. We've even used it to supplement the furnace to help out in really cold conditions.
