Yellowstone from Mt. Rushmore
Hi all, We are considering a trip that includes Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. We will be coming from upstate NY, so it looks like the east entrance might be the “best” way. Well, I returned home over the weekend, and with the replacement standard bracket and noticed that the new one is beginning to bend. So I decided to get my tongue weight. Yesterday via the bathroom scale method. In my first measurement, I got 1350lbs of tongue weight. This is with the trailer not fully loaded for a trip. Missing are basically clothing and food items as that is pretty much what we have to pack for a trip. I also will sometimes travel with some water in the fresh tank, so I added about 1/3 of a tank and the tongue weight went up to 1500lbs. Either way, I am looking at DOUBLE the published tongue weight. I understand that the published is basically empty with no propane tanks, battery, etc, but I did not expect it to be double when loaded. So I am grossly exceeding both my bars, and the standard snap-up brackets (which BTW are rated at 800lbs it appears). Guess I going to move up to the 16K Equalizer setup, as buying the pieces to the Reese are also the same cost. Hi, John… thanks for all the information. What you described is what I feel, I have 1200lbs trunion bars, and I have Had them marked driver/passenger since back in 2010 when I purchased these. I started without the DC then moved to the DC same year. I have 5 links under tension to return the truck front end to its unloaded height. This is with I want to say three or 4 teeth in head tilt. I spent a while getting this setup as always, between changing head tilt and number of links under tension. These bars are on their third TT. After this trip I am considering moving to an equalizer set up simple to gain some ground clearance. At another point leaving a parking lot, this time with a gutter and a large road crown the bottom of the cams hit. I could decrease the head tilt to gain some clearance but I likely would have to und up with only 4 links under tension and I fear I might get a binding situation in tight turns. One thought I also have is I wonder what my true tongue weight is when loaded. Another thing to check when I return home. This is our first long distance trip with this TT, as COVID limited our travel last year. Followed the GPS route…. 81 to 66 to 495 to US 50… was not bad. My biggest mistake was not filling up before we got off 81. 66 is heavy construction ??. Finding a decent sized station with diesel is not easy on the fly. After we got on 50. There was an accident on US 50 right before the bridge that had traffic backed up. Followed GPS route around it by the US navel academy. Looked like the same route west was jammed up on the bridge.400Views0likes0CommentsRoute to Ocean City MD… take 495 or something else
Looking at the GPS route from our location I’m ear Harrisonburg VA to Ft. Whaley campground the fastest is via 495. Taking this tomorrow AM so I suspect traffic will be heavy. We could also go a bit further north and take i70… similar time and distance… thoughts?1.6KViews0likes5Comments
