I avoid idling, have the 5 minute shutdown engaged in the ECM. If it is going to be below 10 deg F I will start it a few times while sleeping in it to insure it starts in the am, letting the diesel fired aux heater(webasto) keep me warm in the cab. Service calls are big bucks. Most municipalities that have idling laws also specify temps when extended idling is allowed. Nothing uniform. Very few truck stops have any shore power. Unnecessary idling is one of the biggest problems in the trucking industry. Huge amount of misinformation and downright selfishness out there. I am sitting next to a major truckload company truck right now who has idled at least 6 hours and it is 60 degrees outside. Major big truck engine manufacturers all say the same thing. Start the truck, let the temp gauge show a little movement, start driving but don't put serious load on the engine until at operating temperature. And this is aimed towards the operator of a vehicle grossing 80k lbs.Re: First Toy Hauler looking for informed inputWork and play definitely HAS 5th wheels toy haulers. There aren't many W&P dealers and they don't stock much, but they are out there. I have their 2017 brochure in front of me. I live full time in a 2008 34FK with a 13.5 garage. I haul a 1996 Tracker in it, and pull it with a Freightliner Argosy cabover tractor, my regular work truck. The only thing to watch for on any Work and Play is the potential for rot in the walls. Hard to detect without knowing what to look for, PM me for particulars. I wouldn't consider the average RV toyhauler. They are mostly an RV trailer that happens to have a garage, and hauling capacities are limited. Race car trailers you saw on Racing Junk would be the way I would go, some of them are pretty nice, albeit all 3 season trailers. But too spartan for other members of the family. Good LuckRe: Will RV parks have a problem with this toyhauler?I have a Work and Play 34FK and it looks better than some of the older travel trailers or 5th wheels in the parks I have been in. Prissy RV resorts like mentioned above might object, but you are not going there. Enjoy.Re: What is a good toy hauler for full timersIf your main squeeze doesn't mind a straight forward no frills interior, look at either a race car trailer with living quarters or a Work and Play, which is a cargo trailer with living quarters. My 5 year old W&P 34 foot 5th wheel was $15,000. There are similar deals all over. Used race car trailers are about the same. Both are 3 season trailers. Caveat with the Work and Play is the walls are FRP(fibreglass reinforced plywood) and can have ROT issues. You can get either as bumper pull or 5th wheel. Major advantage is both have large garages which are suitable for multi purposes and easy to clean. I live full time in a 34FK Work and Play, have a cat and use the garage for a music studio. When I move all that stuff goes on the deck, a 1996 Geo Tracker goes in the garage and to the next location. I don't move much, 3 times a year.Re: New Catalyst from Work & PlayI live full time in a 2008 W&P 34 FK. 2 items to keep in mind about any Work and Play: It is a 3 season trailer period. The FRP walls are solid plywood and have a very low R value. The plumbing and tanks are exposed and no easy way to enclose or heat it. The roof is only R-9 The nature of FRP is well known in the trucking industry. If any leaks that occur around the roof seams or openings will rot the plywood around the immediate area. The aluminum roof is constructed in such as way as to cause an enormous lake of standing water, just asking for a poorly maintained seam to cause problems. That being said, I love my Work and Play. Maintain the roof seams, park the unit when unused intentionally out of level front to back so the water drains off the roof and the rest of the unit is good to go. No higher capacities in the industry and dirt simple to work on.Re: Small carsI have a Work and Play 34fk with a 13'6" garage. Cargo capacity total is in the 6000#range. I easily haul a 2400# 1996 Geo Tracker in the garage. 5000# ramp capacity. Very few toyhaulers have the weight capacity to haul anything larger than a couple of motorcycles. Ramps are even flimsy for that.Re: A positive thread, post yoursJust did my first trip as a full timer in a 34' Work and Play. Went to the HDT Rally in Hutchinson KS, held at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Excellent campground, great people, no problems on the trip from Pennsylvania. Texas is the next stop, I can't believe its legal to have this much fun...Re: So who's in the class of 2013/14?Full timing since June 2013, divorce final in August. Left PA in a 38' Work and Play 1st stop HDT rally in Hutchinson KS, first week of Oct. Great bunch of folks. Will be in east TX for the winter. Back to PA next April. It's called freedom.Re: Luxury toy hauler?I just took a tour of the Spacecraft plant Concordia Mo, where they are building a toyhauler now. Expect to drop at least $100 K but serious engineering combined with signicant experience and best materials. They have 3 trade-ins of more common brands, junk like you said.Re: Tired of Land Yacht Toy Haulers: Challenge to the Industryi just attended the RV show in Hershey, one of the largest in the land. I can see the problem. I have a Work and Play 34 FK with at least 5800# cargo capacity, 3000 # in the garage. Built exactly like the tractor trailers I deliver to East Penn Battery. But it is spartan inside and of course no insulation in the walls at all, and only R-10 in the all aluminum roof. What you want is not available. they market the interior to the little woman, and a garage that will hold one motorcycle or an ATV. But you have 3 TV's mounted outside and a refrig because the customer is too lazy to walk inside to get a cool one. I hope you get the point across.
