Were I to stay pretty much in the high desert (cuz Im already going to do 110 degrees today and don't want any more), areas would it literally be the top third of say, Texas and New Mexico for instance? I'll begin investigating February then as the month to start. ThanksLower SW States in the SpringHello Everyone. I seriously want to take the low roads south cross country through TX, New Mexico, AZ and California, then go up a tad through Utah, and points home to Tallahassee, Course, while there I've not seen Oregon or Montana lol... Then I think I want to sell my Toyota and chill for a bit. Questions are. --- since I'm bringing my dogs and we ALL prefer cold over heat, is it conceivable that maybe March may not be too early?? after all, I'd be willing to bet it would take me two to three weeks just to traverse through Texas from Fl, staying here and there a few days. Also, realistically (comfortably that is), how much time would I need to prepare for, say averaging 4-5 hour drive every 2nd or 3rd day? I'm thinking maybe three months... Thanks for reading.. BethRe: NEW RVer- TOYOTA CLASS C RV - GOOD/BAD IDEA?1212Coleman had a bottom-line great answer. Which I, too, am doing now and would continue no matter what I'm driving. I just returned from a 7000 mile trip cross country in my little Toyota 1990 Class C and can share with you my personal discoveries: --- My trip was flawless in that I had to pay for a new ignition switch as I came to the bottom of a hill into Rapid City. Other than that she drove like a pro. Because I am a me hanical midget though, I take it to a professional and have EVERYTHING Checked out, from the belts, tranny, brakes and so forth. ___Slept like a baby in the overhead cab. Everything works perfectly. I am blessed. So far... --- What I DIDN'T like is that on the back of my rig it states "This is a Non-Towing Vehicle"or some such, which meant that every time I wanted to go INTO a museum or any place for that matter, my rig came with me. It was a royal pain to put EVERYthing away, dump my waste, unhook electric, eater, turn off and unhook cables and so on and so forth every time I needed anything!! My objective is to take it for one more cross-country fling in the spring for a couple/few months, pray for the rest Nd when I get home, sell it fora a 24 or '27 footer. If you're just one person with no animals, ypur Toyota would be doable IMHO. I traveled with two HUGE dogs and it was a huge challenge just to cook or clean lolol.. Hope this helps. PS. Personally I was up and on the road not later than6:00a., so reL traffic on them hills seemed never a problem for me no matter now slow I had to go. Heck, I had a HUMUNGOUS truck in front of me with flashers movin at around 30-something up hills. I certainly wasn't worried passin him at 40-plus.. in other words, my V6 into the Tetons and Yellowstone performed well enough for me. Where there was a line. Holding, I'd just move n let 'me pass. Piece of cake.Re: Camping Florida for 1st timeHello. I've lived in Tallahassee area (often referred to as the Big Bend area) for close to thirty years and prior to that in south Fl. In my humble opinion, the west coast from Tallahassee northwest to Pensacola and points west, have what I've heard to be, some of the top TEN highest rated beaches in the country. Henderson Beach, Graden, St. Andrews, and others are supposed to be Phenominal!! Recently I stayed in a State Park east of these areas, just past Chattachochee but forgot the name. It wasn't on the gulf but rather the Seminole River I believe, well cared for with sites just feet away from the River. Unlike Georgia where one has to pay a "use fee" of some sort, Florida does not require additional fees. St. George Island State Park southwest of Panacea, is known for its pristine and natural surroundings. What you'll tend NOT to see up this-a-way, is a concrete jungle of condos and highrises, but rather much more nature, sand dunes and quiet peace. Hope this helps a bit!! Newbienac '90 Toyota Dolphin, R22 V6summer-Time Sleep ModeHello Everyone. Returned sometime in July from my first so.o trip, a Wild West tour that was just wonderful, did some work-camping and am now settling in until early spring when I'll go cross-country through states southwest. For today though, can you please give me some tips as to how to protect my rig these long months? Should all drawers/Refrig stay open? Some have said I should either keep the AC/Refrig on at least once a month, some say every day. How do I keep the bugs/ants out? I've got wheel covers to put on and it's closed up tight. But in Florida I'm afraid of must and mold" Lastly, what is the co census of care for the toilet? Water full or empty, pine-sol OK? appreciate your thoughts. Thanks so much! BethRe: Internet and Cellular Service (I need your help)I've just returned from a two month quasi cross-country trip. What I used that worked without fail ( except in Oklahoma, which is hands-down a AT&T state), was an off-contract Verizon smartphone and for $5.00 per 500 mgs of ram, teathered my phone to my IPAD. The 45.00 off contract plan comes with 500 mb of data, 5.00 more gave me a gig, and 10.00 more gave me 2 cigs per month which for what I was using it for (surfing the web for my next camp stay), worked out perfectly! I didn't have to pay the $200.00 for Mifi and $20.pp a month for service. My total bill per month for two months was $60.00. The nice thing about off contract is the ability to revert back to the straight $45.00/mo At any time at all with no extra charge! Worked for me, anyways... I'm STILL on my first 5000 mile-plus trip to parts west but hope to be home in ten days or thereabouts. What an eye opener! I need to get ready for my next one though as I e done a few bad thangs. Is there anyone in Florida on here, or lower Georgia even who might can help me by working on the side or making recommendations for me of who can?? There is NO onE that I know of in Tallahassee. Camping World, sight unseen (cuz they won't let me walk on there and speak with their techs no matter WHAT the question is), said they want $1000.00 starters to resell my RV. Needlesstosay, THAT ain't happening not with them anyways... Mostly to look at my seal job and tell me what it needs. Someone when I bought it "poured" plastic (?) over the top and front of the cab and it's starting to peel. Plus a Torcon 4 Storm in Iowa with driving winds forced water in one of my windows; hence, a leak I suppose. The second week of my trip I was driving my little Toyota like it was a four-wheel and couldn't maneauver enough without hitting a baby tree which sprung open a seam in the back bumper area. Ohhhyeah, crimped the back bumper sufficiently enough to cause a kinked-tear through it in one area AND -- if that's not enough --- somehow (don't ask me cuz I don't know), There is a real bend in my Toyota front fender, passenger side. Now I can tear OUT the carpet and install tile flooring, and do SOME things, but not those above. If you, or someone you know comes with references boy I sure am willing to work with you to get 'er done . Thanks, as always, for the help you provide here. Re: Is There Really A Best Route Home?Padredw, these and the suggestions noted by the person before you are great. Tomorrow I'll spend the day taking a look at all of these. I'm Kindof afraid though that if I get into Texas that could be good for WEEKS lolol... And while I'm all for taking my time, I'll be taking a close look. Thanks so much for this great help. BethRe: Is There Really A Best Route Home?Texasshadow, which - where are the river roads??
