All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Help making a decision on truck purchase. We’ve been towing our loaded 7200 pound 28 foot fifth wheel with our 2001 Toyota Tundra for more than 20+years without incident. The 5.7L Tundra has even more capacity for towing. The original Tundra was advertised as a truck that was 7/8 of a full size half-ton which is what I loved. All the capabilities of a half-ton and easier to park in tight spots. My payload is 1924 lbs which was more than many of the other half-tons of that era. The 4.7L is super reliable but as others have mentioned, very thirsty for fuel. I average 7-8 mpg while towing. Even when not towing I get around 13/16 mpg. I like the naturally aspirated engine of my Tundra for its reliable longevity but if fuel economy is a primary concern go with the 3.5 Ecoboost from Ford.Re: BicyclesWe’ve carried up to five bikes(2adults3kids)when the kids were small inside our fifth wheel since 2002 without issue. Now it’s just 2 adult bikes. Just make sure they’re secure enough to not move around too much.Re: Cover for camper while in storage? Yes/no?Those that insist on not using covers are the same ones asking about finding replacements for their faded decals or deciding to repaint. After 21 years of camping, all of our original decals on our 2003 still look great. And it isn’t from sitting out in the full Central California sun. Daily direct sunlight is terrible for your rv when it’s not being used. Get a coverRe: New Maxxis tiresI’m right behind you with about 8.5 flawless years on my Maxxis 8008 tires. They are a great ST tire!Re: Apple car play or XM radioI’ve used XM in my 2001 Toyota for the last 16 years. I had Best Buy install it. I pay around 9-10/month for it. The big reason for us having it is it allows us to listen all the MLB(Dodgers) games while on extended trips in the mountains. I have the base mounted on the floor of the truck below the radio on the carpet of the transmission hump, right up against the lower dash plastic. There is a magnet antenna on the passenger front corner of the truck, close to the regular antenna. For camping trips, I have a separate portable base for the RV and it has its own separate antenna the I put on top of the camper. I can move the small XM receiver back and forth between the truck and camper as needed. Always having to change stations on a long trip is no fun. Good luckRe: New to 5th wheelsThink about adding Sumo springs in place of the bump stops. Easy to do it yourself. It really helped smooth out the ride while towing my fifth wheel.Re: best route to yosemiteIf by “Yosemite” you mean Yosemite valley than your best route would be Crespro’s way. While 395 to 120 is beautiful, going up that way is a steeper grade, especially with your toad, and seems a roundabout way to go if your destination is in fact Yosemite valley.Re: Trip report: Yosemite in the SnowWonderful pictures! Looks like time well spent. Winter in Yosemite can definitely be sublime. Thanks for sharing.Re: Yosemite...how early? We’ve camped in Yosemite valley several times in the month of March when Easter break came early and have always had a good time. Our experience with March camping there has had daytime highs in the 55-70 degree range and nighttime lows in the 25-40 degree range. We’ve had light snowfall on one or two occasions but nothing that lasted or prevented driving. Good luck.Re: The cat is out of the bag ! New Honda Generator !!3000+ watts and only 58 pounds sounds great!!!
