I prefer the old Q-jets in my chevys personally, but in a pinch, I'll use a summit brand carb. They work well out of the box with minimal tuning. Plus they're only like $200 - $250 last i checked.
I'd start with the obvious, check the springs, if it has leaves, check to make sure none are broken, all hardware is tight and secure, make sure nothing is bent. But your best bet would be to just take it somewhere and have them check it out. Unles...
