So I took the carb off again and took the three pieces that come off, off and cleaned them. Didn't really notice much build up but after reassembly, it start up, surged twice and leveled out! Next time I went to start it, no spark. Finally check the points gap and it was way off. Set that and now it seems to run fine. At no load, it runs around 130 volts, at load with ac and electric space heater both runing, it's around 122, does that sound okay? Thanks all for your continued support and assistance, I never would have made it to this point with out your help!Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionGreat, the second link is for my unit. The linkage I am missing is part 22 #153-0558 I am also not sure if I have a fuel filter inline, I will check that tomorrow. Thanks for the parts book! For now, it is still surging. I put it under a load today, small electric heater and a fan, and ran some sea foam through it. I am hoping that might help clean out the carb, if that is my problem. Ok just checked, fuel line goes straight into the elbow, no fuel filter. I will order one.Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionHi The correct owners manual is 965-0528. If I could get a parts list and break down, that would be great. Here a few pics of the backside of the carb and how I wired it together. Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionthanks but doesn't seem to show the linkage I am looking for. I have wired the two together and it acts like it is keeping the choke open.. now for a test run to see what happens!Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionThank you for the diagram. However, the choke lever must connect to a spring or something the pulls it closed. There is a hole in it and there is another component down below it that has a hole so i was thinking the two might connect and the lower would keep the choke closed until the vacuum device opened it. Not sure how it works, just a guess. I was hoping to find an exploded parts diagram of the choke assembly.Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionIf I force the choke partially closed and hold it there with a small piece of wood, it will stop surging. I have done that and let it run for an hour, no load, and have checked the output and its between 127 and 130 volts. I also wondered about that connection to the choke and how it doesn't really move it. If anyone has a picture of what I am missing send it my way. Maybe it is a spring that pulls it closed and the vacuum holds it open.Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionI have tried soaking the carb in a bath of sea foam, read a lot of good things about it. Unfortunately, the surging does not seem any better. Is this definitely a carburetor issue or could it be something else? ThanksRe: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionif a picture is worth a thousand words....this video is worth a million > so as I was putting away some tools, I realized that I had taken the condenser off last night and had been starting the unit today without it. Made me think maybe it was the culprit but when I put it on, it started up and still ran very rough. Guess I will be taking hte carb off and cleaning it out. any other ideas?Re: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionSo last night i wired up a 12 v light bulb to test the Coil. I went out side this morning to test the coil and after a few cranks I got a pop, hmm. So i put my fuel line in the gas can and she fired up. Its running very rough surging with the lever going back and forth. could that be my carburetor gunked up? Also, when I remove my connection from the car battery, the gen dies, is that to be expected? I am guessing cleaning the points made a difference, thats actually what I planned to do today, take them off, clean them up and set the gap. Not sure if I should touch them now. Any other ideas on the surging? Thanks for all of the helpRe: 1989 Onan Generator ingnition coil questionok, so i picked up new plugs, didn't fix it. I do have voltage at the points when I press the start button but I am not seeing any spark at the points. I have tried unplugging the oil sensor, leaving it open and also grounding it, no difference. So I do not have any old condensers laying around, can i get one from sears or an auto parts store, tractor supply? Any ideas on what to get? I also used some emery cloth on the points. Will a bad condenser prevent the points from sparking?
