Lots to see in addition to the "Big 5" national parks. You will not be able to see everything in a couple of weeks. Do not overlook the State Parks and National Monuments. Thanks for the responses. Not sure that switching to Spectrum would be a good choice for where we live and travel. We are currently in Florida. In several locations I have encountered Wifi access points with the SSID Spectrum, Spectrum Mobile and/or Spectrum Free Trial. My internet searches have not provided any information on whether access can be purchased for use of these access points. I am familiar with how Verizon wifi and Xfinity wifi system access works. Not sure if they still do, but at one time Xfinity sold access without having a home internet or wireless account. We have travelled through Kansas twice a year in our travels between the East Coast and New Mexico since 2007. US 50, 54, 56 and 400 have generally been good roads as are the North/South routes US-83, 183, 283, 81 and 281. We have also found that the KS state highways are also generally in good condition. Your total length and what type of accommodations you are looking for if you plan on stopping overnight may be more of an issue for which route you take than the road conditions.1.2KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Reviews on thousand trails camping pass?
Like your Passport America Membership, it will only be worth it if you can use it enough. There are not parks in every state or every area you may want to stay. Some of the parks are not that great and others we find good to excellent. We travel about 5 months a year. We normally get the Southeast Zone. We normally spend 2 weeks in a park, so then must be out of the system for 7 days. That only leaves so many opportunities to use the membership during our time on the road. In order to move park to park you cannot stay more than 4 nights in one park. The Trails Collection add on is not worth it for us because if you stay one night you have to be out of the system for 7 days. So far we have not had any problems getting spots due to the 60 day reservation window, but do make reservations as soon as the window opens. We average about 50 nights a year in the Thousand Trails membership parks which makes our nightly cost about $12. As mentioned there are a number of Corps of Engineers, State, County and local parks that provide camping opportunities. It has been several years ago, but we stayed at a Lions Club park in Atwood and a city park near Smith Center on U.S. 36. If you can get your hands on a copy of the Ultimate Public Campgrounds Project data base, it was one of the best resources I have found for finding city, county and other government campgrounds. docsouce wrote: Boondocking is always on my table too. I used the Ultimate Public Campgrounds website a lot and fortunately downloaded one of the last database updates before they stopped offering them and went to the app or online only. The US Campgrounds website shows the location of many county and local government campgrounds. The website has a map feature and the database can be downloaded. There a lot to see along I-40 between Amarillo and the Grand Canyon. In Amarillo, there is Palo Duro Canyon State Park and the Big Texan on Old Route 66. In New Mexico, Tucumcari still has dinners along Historic Route 66 and numerous murals painted on buildings plus other attractions. Santa Rosa is another Route 66 town and has the The Blue Hole and Santa Rosa Lake State Park which has a nice campground. In Albuquerque, the Pueblo Cultural Center and Petroglyph National Monument, the Turquoise Trail and the Sandia Crest Highwayare worth visiting in my opinion. In Grants, there is the Mining Museum. Just South of I-40 going West from Grants are El Malpais National Monument, El Moro National Monument, El Malpais National Monument, El Malpais National Conservation Area, and the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano. Acoma Sky City is said to be the longest occuppied location in the U.S. They give tours of the pueblo and there is an RV park next to the casino. Homolovi Ruins State Park is near Winslow where you can stand on the corner. Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest National Park are not far from the Arizona/New Mexico border. In the Flagstaff area are Sunset Crater National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, and Walnut Canyon National Monument. Sedona/Camp Verde/Cottonwood are about an hour South of Flagstaff with Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well National Monuments, Tuzigoot National Monument, Palatki and Honaki Ruins, V-Bar-V Heritage Site, Verde Canyon Railroad, Fort Verde State Park, Cathedral Rock, Gold King Mine, Jerome State Historic Park in the area.
