Yhe bottom line is it comfortable for you, I know these older trucks sure slow down uphill compared to new diesel-powered rigs, I travel and enjoy my old truck and no big payment.Re: Fifth wheel towing with an older truckI run a 1988 C3500, paid for and treats me well as long as I ignore its thirst for gas (-: Run what you have and put part of what the payment on a newer truck away for one of the o crud moments that any vehicle will give if you keep it long enough.Re: 1/2 ton truck camper wvabeer wrote: All I can say is I probably am the biggest offender of being over weight 1200 lbs on a 1/2 ton. I would have never done this but needing a 1/2 ton for commuting persuaded me to get a truck camper for what I have. I looked at a few then since the one I wanted SAID 1770 lb I thought ok I can do that. I drove 600 miles to buy it, loaded it and brought it home, it felt fine going down the road. Then I weighed it, 2270lbs. It has worked for me, I don't know about a Nissan. All I can say is try it you may like it but beware of weight tags, they can lie. I ran a Silverado 1500 for awhile, I thought it worked ok after lots of upgrades due to running well over 1000lbs past the GVWR on that truck. I now have a 1 ton dually that is 11 years older, so much nicer. You need a stout truck to carry a camper and it will be hard to setup a 1500 series truck and you won't have many camper choices. Good luck, I have traveled the use the truck I own route.Re: Help.....buying a camperFor dry camping with a SxS I endorse a camper, I dirt bike. You will have a hard to impossible time with your truck. You could buy an older combination paired up with luck if you watch craigslist or ebay. Good luck, keep in mind water damage, camper weight vs cargo capacity of the truck.Re: Help.....buying a camperIf you are looking at a slide in camper after having a motorhome I see a new truck in your future. I have a 9.5 foot long floor camper from the 70's and it is over 3000lbs loaded. I camp without a TV microwave or ac unit. I suggest you go look at, lay in and pretend to use the restroom in lots of slide in campers as the are an amazing rv for some and other hate them. I love mine but hate my restroom. I am using a 1 ton dually to carry it and am much happier than when I used a modified Silverado 1500 under it.Re: What's the story with "No TOAD on the road"?I use a truck camper, many of my big trips I trailer a motorcycle, our bike with a sidecar is an amazing toad and we enjoy the toad even with a small rig.Re: Our Lance will be 20 years old in March........2007 or 2008 I bought a Dreamer, it is pushing 40 years old and we are pushing 30 nights in it this year. Tow vehicle is pushing 30 years old. Well built and cared for things can last.Re: Hesitant owner of 1/2 ton, need 3/4 ton?Had a half ton, now have a one ton dually. You find the right camper, going to be hard, it will work. I love my one ton, it is my play not commute vehicle. Match the weights or you will regret it.Re: Comments on a Chevy 1996 gas 3500 4x4 Dually?1988 7.4l owner, very happy with my dually. Gas mileage sucks, a bit slow up some hills but it gets me around with my camper and with no payments I can go out and enjoy. Bought my truck in 2014 with just under 63,000 miles on it, less than 6grand.Re: Camper step / bumper stepI use the step stool like Deb and Ed, only concern very slick with winter mix on it. Straddles trailer just fine or allows straight shot into camper without trailer. Most my travels have trailer with me.
