So they write a little piece of information about the orientation in something called an exif tag. Most programs read that tag and autorotate the image for display. So either your camera is not writng that tag correctly or the program that shows it sideways isn't interpreting it correctly.Re: Frustrations with new technology...GRRRR!X2 on MrWizard's comments. The fault lies with your camera. The other behavior is just inconsistency in how the programs interpret the image metadata on orientation (or lack thereof).Re: email privacy ljr wrote: DavinD wrote: Email encryption is an option. Working in a medical company we use it all the time as it's required for HIPAA. That means X509 certificates and SMIME capable clients on both ends. That’s quite a learning curve to climb. Agreed. There is no user-friendly encrypted email solution on the market.Re: Echo Show: anyone writing skills? ccchuck wrote: Would you guess if a skill to show a webpage is possible? I have no background in programing, so I'm at the mercy of whatever gets posted by DIY types. Would appreciate a heads up should you see something that might work for me. Without programming, you're limited to what's provided by the Skill Blueprints and it doesn't look like they have much functionality. You pick a template and fill in the blanks, basically. So like a quiz show where you provide the questions and answers or a story teller where you provide the story. Even if you can program, displaying a webpage is probably going to be a challenge in any case. The Show's display capabilities are limited to some predefined templates, as far as I know. In theory, you could probably create an image of what the website display looks like, but I think it would be a lot of effort.Re: Echo Show: anyone writing skills?I've written a couple. It's definitely non-trivial - if you don't have a development/IT background it can be a challenge. It supports any web language and their are frameworks already created for many of them such as Python and Javascript. However, Amazon recently announced a much easier way to create skills called "Blueprints". I have not looked into this yet, but it seems oriented to pretty basic ask/answer kind of skills. You need to have a web endpoint to handle the requests, the things the user will ask for. That means running a public web server which is probably beyond casual skill creators. An alternative is to use AWS Lambda.Re: Internet service speed – Dsl, cable, fiber, and alternativesRather than go by what the providers claim they might be able to do, ask the neighbors in the areas you're looking in what they have for Internet and what their experiences are.Re: Local Media Server Jimf1234 wrote: Kodi worked great I just need a different piece of hardware for the Kodi client. Do some more research on Kodi and Plex. Out of the box they may want you to authenticate to an external server, but at least on Plex there's an option to specify a network that doesn't require authentication and therefore doesn't need an external connection. I suspect Kodi might be similar given their shared heritage with Plex.Re: Streaming providers, who, what, why. If the host is compromised, consider any connected backup drive lost or compromised. Good advice. The practical application that I assume you might be thinking of is ransomware - they will generally encrypt any device the compromised system can access so if your backup drive is attached it would be encrypted, too.Re: Firefox and a search engineFirefox is changing their default search engine from Yahoo to Google. Yahoo is suing them over it. That may be the change to Google you saw.
