One thing to note is that if your vehicle has both navigation *and* SiriusXM, the antenna used should be dual band, which is what Ford uses. https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27593249/srt/pa/pging/1/page/2.cfm JoeRe: License plate on Truck? or camper (with overhang)? The first time I ever put my first camper on my truck I tried the leave the regular license plate on the truck, and then take the front license plate and put that on the camper, where it is more visible. In california the registration tags are only put on the rear license plate. Several hundred miles later I was pulled over by the california highway patrol. I was told that the plate with the registration needed to be removed from the truck and put on the back of the camper. The officer didn't really care about the front plate not being on the front. I grabbed a screwdriver and crawled under the truck and took care of it right then. Yeah, I found out later that he was wrong, as described in a post above, but over the years I just figure the hassle of being pulled over isn't worth it so the plate goes on the camper, and I've never been pulled over since.Re: Drop camper to launch boat?I've never taken the camper off to launch either, and if the ramp is wide enough I'll drive down head first and circle at the bottom. The camper feels top heavy and it feels like it's going to tip over, but if you're just idling around the turn at the bottom of the ramp you'd be surprised at how much of an angle it'll take. On less steep ramps my biggest problem is keeping the lower rear overhang of the camper out of the water. I really don't want the camper to get wet. For temporary use I've used an extra 18" hitch extension to give me more length. Also, I have a camera mounted above the door and displaying on the dash, but backing the boat in the water I tend to use my side mirrors more and just glance at the camera. It might be that I'm just not used to the camera that much - for 20+ years I only had mirrors. :) -JoeRe: air bagsI'm not sure about Air Life, but I have a 21 year old AirLift system in my 1994 F-250, still works fine. Could probably wait another 20 years for a full report, but by then the truck itself won't be any good. -JoeRe: Pleasanton RV showMy wife and I also were at the show this past weekend. The Cirrus was the most interesting slide-in we saw there, we both liked it a lot save for the fact that they don't make a version for a pickup with an 8-foot bed. The front window in the cabover was the coolest thing I've ever seen. She would like at least a 9 1/2 foot version with more storage, I would like a longer version with both more freshwater tank capacity and one more bottle of propane. They fix those nits and we will be hard pressed to say no. The camper I wanted to like more than any other was the new Ford-branded camper; the joint venture between Ford and Iforgetwhatmidwesterncompanythatbuildsthem. First, no 10 foot version, they only had the short ones. Second - odd layout. In one they have some sort of shallow outside storage compartment that prevents the bathroom from being a bit larger. Second - she did not prefer the liberal use of exposed piano hinges everywhere inside. The other thing she caught was their printed brochure had the photos and descriptions of two of the models transposed - a real basic mistake. Her most telling comment after going through the campers and the accompanying trailer they had, "I can't believe that Ford would associate their name with products like this." Ouch. Other surprise for me was seeing 2016 E-450 van chassis' with honest to goodness 6.8L V-10 engines. I had thought that Ford stopped making the E-Series. Those Dodge Sprinter / Mercedes euro-diesel rigs are going for $150K, and I was afraid Ford was going that route with the replacement full size van. -GatorRe: Improving our brakesIn my 1994 F-250 I replaced the brake master cylinder with one from the F-450/550 series trucks. It's almost a direct bolt-in and really firmed up the brakes and reduced the amount of pedal pressure needed for a panic stop. I don't know how far back in the model years this trick will work, but my brother-in-law with a 1990 F-250 turned me on to it. I did this mod back in 2002 and it's been in there working great ever since. -JoeRe: Can I leave my T/C plugged in to A/C when not in use?I keep the camper plugged into AC always when it's at home, but the AC line is on a timer (same one I use for the Christmas lights on the house) so the AC circuit is only on about 6 hours per night. My theory is this charges the battery only a few hours a night even though the onboard battery charger is a good one. I've been doing this for years and the Costco el-cheapo camper battery usually lasts 5 - 6 years between replacements. -JoeRe: Refrigerator replacementBeen there, done that. My 1995 Lance has an RM2510. (I think) I also wanted to update to a newer, more modern design but the physical layout of the cabinetry wouldn't allow for any other sized reefer. To get a new reefer in you have to partially disassemble it, as it won't fit through the door otherwise. It appears that the camper is built *around* the refrigerator. However, the part number listed above is for a Sat Radio only and does not work for GPS. (I tried it). Best bet is to take your truck's VIN to the local Ford dealer and have them look up the part number for a replacement for the antenna that is on your truck. Note that the Sat Radio only antenna is about $40 but the combo radio+GPS is about $65. What year/make/model truck do you have? The part numbers I listed above are correct for a 2014 Ford Super Duty. -Joe I have a 2012 F350 Lariat. I bought and installed that PN. That Sat radio worked fine, the GPS did't. Went to the local Ford dealer and they verified that it was the wrong part, it was for an non Nav/GPS truck. Model year 2012 used the Generation 1 Sync system. 2013 and up use Generation 2 Sync. That might be the problem. I've used the above part numbers in four installations (2013 and up Super Duties) with no problems. I have not moved the antenna in a 2012 or older. -JoeRe: sat radio antenna CaFordGuy wrote: I did it his mod, mainly for GPS. It works great.
