All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsFDA warning on H5N1 (bird flu) This just came to my inbox: BTW HPAI is the acronym for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza - H5N1 "Felines, including both domestic and wild cats, such as tigers, mountain lions, lynx, etc., are particularly sensitive to HPAI and care should be taken to not expose these animals to the virus. There have been several recent investigations indicating transmission of HPAI to cats through food, most often unpasteurized milk or raw or undercooked meats. Cats should not be fed any products from affected farms that have not been thoroughly cooked or pasteurized to kill the virus. Cats should also be kept from hunting and consuming wild birds. " While camping our pets may be at greater risk for exposure to the virus. Cats seem to be more susceptible than dogs. Just be aware. Doug, DVM Re: Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy I'll trade weather with you! We didn't get above ZERO yesterday and won't until Wednesday. Our dogs are mixed in their reaction, the Golden (Winnie) loves it and wants to go out and roll in the snow. Kaylee does go out but her tiny feet start to hurt within minutes and she's reduced to using an indoor pad if she doesn't take care of business fast enough. I hope the Texas power infrastructure hold this year so people don't have to go through past events. While we get temperature spells similar to this, this one is pretty severe. Re: Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy Sandy has had the ablation procedure on her back 3 times over the last 5 or so years. They help tremendously, but unfortunately don't last permanently. The 6-12 months seemed to be the outcome for her. Good luck to your spousal unit!! Merry Christmas to all. Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story} You may have display issues due to the change over to a new platform. All the replies of this thread are still here. The navigation is different and is taking me some time to get used to it. Re: All buttoned up for winter. Anyone else? Same here (Northwest Indiana), though hoping that health issues will allow us to head south for at least some time this winter. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! Re: Illinois I-55 or I-57I notice you're from Kalamazoo. If you are heading to Michigan, take I57. There is little difference between I57/I55 and I80 from I55 to I57 is TERRIBLE.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}I was wondering about you and the hurricane. Hope you all come out without too much damage. We spent parts of several winters in Crystal River. It looks like the whole city is in zone A and headed for a major storm surge. We also loved Homosassa Wildlife State Park and are worried about the effects of the storm surge on their residents. DougRe: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}Age, breed and history suggests patellar luxation as a possibility. Medial patellar luxation.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}So sorry for your loss. Pickles was certainly special and you and Patty gave her a wonderful life. We're thinking of you both.Re: Around Chicago west to east? There are construction projects going on I80 in NW Indiana. I'd avoid at any time until construction is finished. US 30 is a poor alternative unless you like stop and go and many stop lights. US 24 is a reasonable alternative, but I don't know if construction is taking place now.
