Great place to comparison shop. Pretty much every manufacturer is there with the various brands and models- Travel trailers, 5th wheels, motor homes, vans, everything. The larger RV dealers are also there. There is also a KOA next to the fairgrounds if you want spend more than a day.Re: Lower Kern RiverIf you mean the Lower Kern before it empties into Lake Isabella, there is a KOA on 178, near Weldon. There is a nature preserve close by. I don't know about kayak launching there. Farther east on 178 is BLM-managed Chimney Peak Recreation Area. Plenty of campgrounds around Isabella. And yes, the area gets busy in summer. Also hot.Re: CA 395 from I-15 to CA 58Another vote for 395.Re: Travel with CatsI'm a camp host. I work 6 months out of the year and I bring "Camper Kitty" for the duration. I use the "Breeze" litter system because I have to keep the litter box in the shower pan. Breeze has a tray you place a pad in to catch the urine. The litter is a larger pellet-type that doesn't go down the drain. It can be expensive but I stock up for the year at Petsmart's sales where you buy 2 (litter/pads), get 1 free.Re: Anybody Make A TT With a Single Twin Bed?I RV solo also. I have a Surveyor 189, with a 60X80 queen bed across the front wall. It's about 20' long and has a slide-out with a jack-knife sofa in lieu of dinette. Lots of floor space and lots of storage apace. The bad news: Surveyor no longer makes this floor plan but you might find a used one.Re: What is the best NP camping experience?Another thought about Yosemite: look at camping in the Eastern Sierra and enter the park from Tioga Pass on highway 120. The scenery is awesome and you will also be near Mono Lake. There are plenty of NF campgrounds in the nearby towns of Lee Vining, June Lake, and Mammoth Lakes. Most are on reservation. Before Memorial Day and after Labor Day are the best times; during the summer, it is family vacation central.Re: Barstow, CA - BLM Owl Canyon Campground... In case you're still in the area... Farther north on I-15 is another BLM campground, Afton Canyon. It is one of the few places where the Mojave River flows above ground. A nice scenic area. My daughter and I tented there over Halloween weekend. It was nearly empty then, but when I did a re-con run three weeks earlier, it was nearly full with mostly off-roaders. The Mojave Road is close by and so is the Rasor OHV area. As you get near the campground, the road goes down a hill that is soft sand. I didn't know if my 2WD truck towing my trailer would get stuck on the way out, hence the tent camping. But a small class C made it in and out.Re: Camping on the beach in southern CABolsa Chica State Beach. You're in a parking lot right next to the sand. (It is very popular, so you need to make reservations 6 months out.)So Cal 91 Freeway Full Closure PlannedCal Trans is planning a full (east- and westbound) weekend closure of the 91 Freeway through Corona. When: Beginning Friday, 2/19/16 at 9:00 pm thru Monday, 2/22/16 at 4:00 am. Where: Between the I-15 on the east and Highway 71 on the west. The 91 is the major connector between Los Angeles/Orange County area and the Inland Empire/Palm Springs area. Cal Trans recommends I-10 or Highway 60 as alternate routes. Those freeways will be even more packed than they are. Your best best is to avoid the whole mess.Re: How did you get started? It starts with my dad. One year, he rented a truck camper for our summer vacation. Two adults, four kids (one with a recently broken leg), and a dog. Dad drove with my eagle-eyed brother riding shotgun to read traffic signs. Mom rode back in the camper with the rest of us. (Hey, it was the late 60's.) From So Cal to Yosemite, Sutter's Fort, and San Francisco. We had a great time. My dad was hooked. We would go to El Monte and look at the RV's on the various lots on Sundays. He decided he wanted a motor home and knew the difference between a Class A and a Class C. He rented a couple of motor homes to take cross country trips since my parents hated to fly. He was happiest driving those motor homes. In the mid-80's, I got a job at Fleetwood Enterprises, working in Travel Trailer Product Development. At that time, Fleetwood was introducing the Bounder motor home. My dad was disappointed because I wasn't working in the motor home division. :B My dad died suddenly and did not get the chance to buy that retirement motor home he wanted. But I did get the retirement TRAVEL TRAILER I wanted!
