Yes, you are correct. From Badlands to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone I will take the main interstates. Getting out of Fl i will take I75 and was planning on taking main interstates up through GA, TN, KY, IL, IA, then over in SD. I have been told by so many to try and avoid the Interstates due to the speed of everyone else and that, "I'll get there the same time because my speed wont change from interstate to highway". However, some good points were made here regarding the passing lanes and longer drive times. I would like to avoid high traffic and will plan my traveling to avoid metro areas around busiest times. I would like to avoid the extra draft situations by staying off interstates, but I also do not want to add more days to driving just to do so. It looks like there are benefits/disadvantages to each so I'm going to just see how it goes and have an alternate route (highway) to switch to if I want to compare the two.Re: Best way to stay off Interstates. From FL to Rapid City, SDThanks for all the advice and tips!Re: Best way to stay off Interstates. From FL to Rapid City, SDMy biggest concern with taking the Interstates is being blown all over. I drive about 50-60 and don't want to go faster than that. I suppose I'll just have to bear it because my route is already planned out and way faster than the highways. I just don't think it's safe going 10-20 miles under the speed limit either, but I'm still new at this and am not going to do 65 while towing.Best way to stay off Interstates. From FL to Rapid City, SDWhat's the best route to stay off the interstates from FL to Rapid city? I'll be using I75north to get out of FL. What is safest route from there? Wanting to avoid St Louis and head up to Iowa in order to avoid. Any suggestions?Re: Hwy 22 west out of Jackson to W. YellowstoneI'm a bit confused how you live in Jackson and don't know about that pass? It's horrible. I've wrecked on it in '97 (due to black ice but thankfully the snow banks kept me on the hill). My brother has wrecked on it with his dually. He has replaced 2 transmissions on 2 different trucks due to having to live in the valley but work in Jackson. My uncle had same thing happen to his trucks. Every year, once in summer, once in winter, there was a serious wreck with deaths involved on that pass when I lived out there. The guardrails were limited so several people I know have rolled down the side. 1 broke his back but survived, another survived but the driver he was with didn't. It's a serious hazard, hard on your vehicle and brakes. Avoid it. Easier to go through Yellowstone. The road construction will be over in a week, hopefully.Re: Considering a used tow bar dodge guy wrote: I bought a used Roadmaster 5000 off a guy on CL. It was used once and it shows! I paid $300 and it included a complete toad braking system. :E I'm jealous!Re: Toading Honda Pilot? Odyssey?thanks all!Re: Toading Honda Pilot? Odyssey? Dave in TN wrote: What year vehicle are you looking to tow? I tow a 2005 Acura MDX (mechanically similar to the Pilot) with no issues, but it was around 1/2 way through the 2005 model I believe that Honda changed their stance on recreational towing of these vehicles. So I am assuming you are looking at pulling a 2006 or newer? I'm looking at purchasing whatever year will work as a toad. If the older MDX will toad then I'll look for that. Same with the Pilot and Odyssey. The Traverse weight stays around 4700lbs for all the years I've looked up. THe Hondas weigh closer to 4000 with exception of Odyssey. I can tow up to 5k. This is why I'm even bothering with them. The Explorer 4x4 can toad but living in FL, I'd rather save the gas mph and find a 4x2. I need something with cargo room behind 3rd row. This will serve as main family car for 6-7 people.Toading Honda Pilot? Odyssey?Should I or shouldn't I? These are lighter than the Traverse, Explorer and Outlook. The later 3 push me to the limit of 5k pounds to tow. I like having more breathing room with the pilot or odyssey. This is the statement on Remco for the Pilot and Odyssey vehicles. Towable as is with speed and/or distance restrictions. Please see Owner's Manual for confirmation and procedures. It is not recommended to tow this vehicle over 65MPH When towing for an extended period of time, start the vehicle as often as possible and allow it to run for five minutes to prevent battery drain. Officially from both Honda and REMCO the vehicle is not towable. However, we at Remco have a large number of customers who are flat-towing that vehicle behind their Motor Home and they are not having any issues. Follow the "Emergency Towing" procedures in the owner's manual to a "T" except ignore the restrictions and follow those procedures each and every time you tow. NOTE: If you choose tow your Honda, and have any damage to the Transmission as a result, you will have to pay for that expense out of pocket. It is nothing that Honda or Remco will warranty. Also, it should be noted that Remco sells no aftermarket product (Lube Pump or otherwise) to make this car towable. Looking to toad approx. 8-10k miles a year. Please let me know if you have towed either of these Hondas and can tell me if it was successful or not.Re: Should I have base plates professionally installed?I'm trading in my current vehicle (close to 100k miles anyway) and leaning towards a 2012 Chevy Traverse or Explorer of same year. I'd really like Honda Pilot because it's lighter but honda and Remco do not warrranty (although the site also says it can be done). I may try to do it myself if I can find time. It gives my boys an opportunity to learn these things. :)
