All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsSuburban DSI water heater won’t lightI went through all the typical troubleshooting. I opened the gas line right st the water heater and it is flowing good and the gas works on the stove and the furnace. Hooked up to electricity the electric element heats up the water. The switch in the RV for the water heater is illuminated. It only works if the 110 breaker is on. I can not find a 12v fuse for the water heater, but I checked all fuses and they all look good. I can’t find another switch for the water heater. I put a multimeter on the 12v wires at the water heater and there is no power. I just bought this and it is a cheap small RV. 2010 Heartland North Trail FX18. What am I supposed to be looking for here? I can’t figure out why no fuse appears to be for the water heater. I will directly power the water heater to test it, but it seems clear the reason it doesn’t work is that there is no 12v power to it. I have easy access to it so I have easy access to put the multimeter on the wires. 110 power only, no 12v power. It makes no sense that no 12v fuse appears to be for the water heater.Re: Slide Hydraulic Out is Great, In is TempermentalI have two brand new batteries last September and voltage is full. I do have the circuit breakers just like that. I thought they went bad completely, not partially. They are cheap so I will replace each one of them and see if that makes the difference. Thanks for pointing that out.Slide Hydraulic Out is Great, In is TempermentalI have a 2006 Montana Mountaineer 342PHT with three slides. It has an electric motor with a solenoid and hydraulic pump and hydraulic hoses going to hydraulic rams for the slide outs. When I put them out I push the button and it works great. When I put them in it stops and I have to wait 5-10 seconds to go again and this goes on for about 10 times until they are in. I replaced the solenoid but that is not it. Hydraulic reservoir is half full. Is that not enough? Any ideas of what to check next? It always works, but always like this for the past year and I have put them in and out at least two dozen times.Re: power awning question. While on the subject of power awnings, what do people like? I need to replace the fabric on my 5th wheel awning and I was thinking of taking it off and going power. I don't care how much work it is to install, that doesn't both me. Anyone have any strong likes or dislikes on the brands and models?Re: Fifth wheel ins? Liability?Read your policy. It's funny my agent just told me he has no idea exactly what the coverage is on the thousand of types he sells. He said he doesn't read the policies. Frankly, he couldn't memorize all that anyway. One company could say they cover RV at home, then at camp but not hitched. Other policy could say it is covered in all scenarios. He gave me one, I read it, then I said it doesn't cover everything I want so he just got me a different company and that has what I want. It's unfortunate but you have to spend hours reading these things because they are all different. Then every year you get a renewal and it excludes some coverage you had the year prior but if you don't read it you don't know. Just happened to a friend that had $25 med pay coverage doubled to $50k if wearing seatbelt. Then renewal eliminated the doubling (and increased the premium). Car accident resulted in $55k in med bills and only $25k covered because he didn't read the renewal. And was only two months into renewal or would have had $50k covered of the bills and only been responsible for the last $5k.Re: Forest river cardinal vs keystone Montana ?I bought a used 2006 or 2007 Montana Mountaineer 342 PHT (sold as 2006 but based on manufacture date I think it is 2007). It is great. Issue with fixing he heater and the solenoid for slide pump. Otherwise nothing. But after a few years having to do those two things don't seem like a big deal and Keystone didn't manufacture either of those items. If I bought it new and that happened early then I would presume warranty. Frame is in great shape and it is a joy for my family of seven to use. We came from a 23' hybrid so this is like a mansion to us. The only thing I would have done different is a switch inside to the outlet outside so I can flick that to shut off lights outside at nigh instead of going outside. Considering that is the only thing I would change I am very happy. We stopped using it in October for the winter and already itching to schedule the next trip. Maybe April will be warm enough to go down to Massachusetts.Re: 5th wheel lengths (model# vs reality)I looked at the brochure for mine and the outside listed length is correct but in reality it is off by more than a foot because it doesn't include the rear bumper and then the ladder sticks out further. If you got a place that limits length for a site you may have to ask if they include just the shell or the also the bumper and ladder if you are close. My is a 5th wheel so I didn't figure on a tongue. But in reality is I were to include the 5th hitch as well it sticks out the front a bit so that would be even more of a problem depending on what the place measures for limiting. Generally I see this at state parks in maine.Re: What Tow Vehicle is Enough?Just saw the dd post. Not a chance. My dd is a 2011 BMW 328i x drive with 130 horsepower. I have driven a lot of trucks and love them, but they call it the ultimate driving machine for a reason. We have a 2014 toyota sienna minivan and if that was my daily driver I would have kept my 2002 chevy 2500hd crew cab 8' bed 6.0l as my daily driver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just had to sell that truck as it needed rocker panels and a cat so it was time to jump up a decade. With a plow on it I made a quick sale at $10k because everyone wants a plow truck out here in December. It only had 101k miles. Had a spray in berliner and left 5th rails in it. Everything inside worked and nice tires. I think the guy that bought it got a good deal and I was happy with what I sold it for. He seemed like he was going to do the work himself.Re: What Tow Vehicle is Enough?I made a mistake on my weight numbers. When I weighed the truck and camper and then weighed the truck I did the math wrong. I actually haul the camper about 11,500 pounds and there is no way I would put more than 1,000 pounds additional in there even on a long trip so 12,500 max. Usually 3 kids want to ride with me (the boys) and the girls ride with mom in the minivan. They are skinny so with all gear I probably only need to add another 300 pounds in the truck. I still understand the reason for a diesel and a dually, but my numbers were too high. Somebody said I was towing over my gross - and I realize that person was using my erroneous number - but looks like I was just under the 22k. I find it interesting that the dually diesel gross is the same - just looking at 2002 - and won't be buying one that old (by about a decade). I guess once I think about it they are the same frames I presume and I would think with the heavier diesel and dually the actually towing weight left is less than with a 2500hd gas. Granted, the more powerful engine and stability of the drw makes sense too. I have been very sick for two days so nothing to do but look stuff up on the internet. I am getting enlightened. Not looking forward to what appears obvious more expensive repairs on a diesel and peeing in the exhaust at $5 per gallon. My father in law just sold off his dairy farm. He could have had a side job refining cow pee into the stuff that goes into the trucks. I have thinking about the concept of slowing down on hills causing a safety hazard. I can't concede to this. It isn't my fault if someone decides to unsafely pass me. And I don't think this situation exists on the east coast because we always have an added lane on hills here. Is that not the case out west? I would actually pull into the break down lane if there wasn't an additional lane added on the hill if I was slowing down that much, but I can't think of anywhere in New England where we don't get the added lane on hills.Re: What Tow Vehicle is Enough?I guess I was content to drive what I had because I hadn't tried anything bigger. I imagine I will be even happier once I use diesel dually. We take truck with camper and separate minivan. I wish we could all fit in a truck and go but with 5 kids it just isn't possible.
