I have a saying, Alaska is not just a destination, it's a state of mind. Meaning you should make realistic expectations for your trip. IMHO the Kenai Peninsula alone deserves 7 days for a first time visitor. This will give you time to enjoy yourself and not spend so much time driving. We live here in Seward and could help you with some local knowledge, if needed. Denali is great but it's a long drive and truthfully gets mixed reviews. The natural beauty is there but seeing Bears, Wolves, Moose, Caribou, etc. is all a gamble because it's not a zoo. I have learned you need to be in the right place at the right time so see wildlife. Sometimes you will see more moose in Anchorage than Denali. Enjoy the trip.Re: KLONDIKE LOOP / TOP OF THE WORLD HIGHWAYIf you are coming up to Alaska for the "Experience", we feel Top of the World Highway is not to be missed. You can do it on the way up or way home. Crossing the Yukon on a ferry was so unique and the town of Dawson was a lot of fun. I think we are going to return to Chicken this year. It was the only place I ever found measurable amounts of gold when prospecting.Re: Fishing Question 'en Plain Air' wrote: Hi We'll be driving through British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska this summer and I have a question about fishing. I would like to take my standard rod and spinner reel (I don't fly fish) and cast into whatever body of water we might be camped near, to catch a pan fish for dinner. Don't want to make a massive project of this effort, but do want some useful information. Just the act of fishing is fun ... catching or not. Catching would be preferable. I'll need a license for each territory. Is there any clear resource materials on an appropriate mix of tackle, how to catch an 'easy get' fish, what kinds of fish I might catch this way. Is this a crazy idea? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I highly recommend the Highway Angler book. Unless you have a friend going on the ocean requires a charter and they provide all the gear. I really enjoy the small lakes and creeks. Check out this post about what to pack for the the outdoors.
