The trade off is,,,,,, You loose 2 feet of useable cargo space, You cannot carry a sheet of plywood or sheetrock with the tail gate closed, You may need or want a much heavier slider hitch, thereby reducing your available cargo capacity, You likely could not fit the truck with a folding bed cover, Rarely have I ever seen a 3500 short bed truck. Which indicates to me your interested in a 2500 series truck? Which is fine as long as your looking at a short, light fiver. Once you go over about 12,000 pounds gross your going to want a 3500 series truck. Crazy .... - Long bed gains 2 ft which I don't need. I never "lost" 2 ft! - I carry full 4x8 sheets of whatever I need with the tailgate closed. - They just sit on the bed rails. - I don't use a slider (AUH) and have zero problems. Over 40,000 miles towed. - Don't have or want a bed cover. - Not sure at all about this comment regarding rarely seeing 3500 shorts beds. My GMC Denali 3500 is a 6'6" "regular" bed truck bought off the lot and I see them all the time. - My 5th wheel is 36 ft. with a GVWR of 13,599. My truck payload is 3,570 lbs. Fully loaded truck and trailer maintains my payload within limits.Re: Truck limitYou've opened yourself to a huge variety of answers but still a great question. There are towing guides online that I would trust more than everyone's personal opinions and "feelings", like I tow my 15,000 lb trailer with my F150 and I can't even tell it's back there. All that said, first, I'd stick to the door tag. If your trucks door tag states you have a payload capacity of 2380, that's what I go by. Second, always use the GVWR to estimate your pin weight (short of a true weighing). Using a rough guide of 20% of trailer weight that trailer will have 3,000 lbs on the pin. My trailer runs nearly 23% of GVW so it can definitely vary. My trailer weighs (Cat Scales) right at 13,500 lbs. My pin is just short of 3,200. I'm close with my 2016 Denali 3500 SRW with a door tag payload capacity of 3569 . I would go to a 1 ton if I were you. Good luck with your decision.Re: 5TH Wheel Bike and Generator RackInteresting comments ... not sure why you would discriminate between good bikes or bad bikes riding on the rear of your trailer. My concern if they came off would be damage or injury to anyone following rather than the cost of the bikes but that's just me. Originally I had a Yakima roof rack on the truck which I really loved but got a little tired of getting the bikes on and off. We have carried our bikes on the rear of our 5th wheels for the last 7 years without issue. Considerations are the load capacity and construction of the hitch receiver and the quality of the bike rack. On my previous Cougar, I had a local welding shop reinforce the entire receiver as it was **** from the manufacturer but when done correctly works fine.Re: Pulled the Trigger on a Grand Design Reflection 303RLSYou can run the A/C with a 30 amp outlet. We have our trailer at home and put in a 30 amp RV outlet when we had our previous trailer. It works just fine with our 50 amp trailer.Re: Safety Chains Andersen HitchI've pulled my 5th with the Andersen over 40,000 miles, coast to coast, border to border and into Canada 3 times and I don't have safety chains and have never been stopped or questioned.Re: Looking for quality 5th wheelHere you go. This trailer looks pretty cool for your purposes to me. http://escapetrailer.com/trailers/the-5-0-escape/Re: Running a Geni in the storage compartment? My 5th wheel front compartment isn't large enough for a 5500 (or 6500) so I installed a 3600 LP Onan. It connects through a 50 amp automatic transfer switch. It runs off the existing LP tanks. Obviously it won't run both A/Cs at the same time but will run 1 and another item like the microwave or the coffee maker. Unlike the larger units (5500 or 6500) which draw air from the bottom, the 3600 draws from the front so I also needed to cut a opening in the front compartment door for air. It all looks and works like it was factory installed. As with dfletch, I constructed my box of plywood which is covered inside and out with heat (and some amount of sound) covering (Reflectix). I also used it on the inside of the compartment door. I've had mine installed for over 2 years now and I like it much better than my 2 Honda 2000 gennies for most every reason with the slight exception of fuel economy. The Hondas will run much longer on cheap unleaded gas while the Onan uses about 3/4 to 1 gallon of propane an hour.Re: F250 payload capacity and hitch weightYeah, actually the pin should be more like 20% than 17% for handling reasons. I am also surprised your F250 is only rated at 1865 lbs. Is that from the door sticker? Glad to see you're concerned though. In your planning you would be better served by looking at the gross weights and corresponding pin weights. So in the case of the 28HB you're looking at a GVWR of 10,995 or a pin of nearly 2,200 lbs. Sorry but the old story of smaller trailer or bigger truck may apply here.Re: Granddesign Reflection 28 BH gooseneck compatible ?GD does use Lippert frames and components. Lippert will only warranty their frames if you use the Reese Goose Box which should work perfectly for you.Re: Fifth Wheel/Diesel mpgI agree with the previous comments. You are in an enviable position to be unshackled by what truck you own before you buy a 5th wheel. There is little difference in price between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton truck. Get the 1 ton and leave your worries behind. This advise is from people, at least me, who did it the other way around and regretted it and had to loose some money to get it fixed. Lucky you! Get a 1 ton :)
