All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Driving the Dempster HwyWe just came off the Dempster yesterday. The road to tombstone is in great shape, spent the first night at Engineer Creek. Lots of mosquitos. Some rough patches signed for 50kph between there and Peel River. Rough before NWT border as well. Road between peel and MacKenzie is good, north of Mackenzie to Inuvik is fantastic. Road construction from the intersection south of Inuvik thru to the Marine bypass signed 50 and 30 kph. We stayed at Jak campground. Quieter than Happy Valley, more room between sites and great bathrooms. 15a sites available, dump and fresh water available at Happy Valley for Jak campers. Eat at Alistines on Franklin and Millen if you don’t want to cook. Fish tacos with caught fresh daily from the Mackenzie whitefish are the best I’ve ever had. Road to Tuk from Inuvik is in great shape. There are patches of deeper gravel in places especially the last few miles into Tuk. The campground at the point is now $60cdn/nite plus $3 tax. So $63cdn. Pay at the visitors center a few blocks south on the right as you head up. The “beach” is signed for no swimming. Traditional fishing grounds. Last night on the road was at the campground just above the Peel River ferry, between it and Fort MacPherson behind the visitors info station. Also an excellent campground with great bathrooms and showers. We’re currently at Good Rush in Dawson. Don’t understand the negative comments about this place. Office staff is great to deal with, Pat the owner is very accommodating, we’re walking everywhere around town, and we’ll be using the showers in the am. I’ll let you know if they’re warm or cold. k.Re: Roll Call Alaska 2019Bumping this up. We crossed the border at Aldergrove about 10am today. One lane open and no wait ! Came up 1 along the Fraser and Thompson rivers, and currently in a very quiet and almost empty campground at Lac la Heche. There was a fire just past the 12 intersection but it wasn’t large when we passed and was being fought from the road. Crossed paths with a field editor for the Milepost and chatted for about an hour at one of the provincial campgrounds along the Thompson River that we stopped at for a break. I am really surprised we’re not seeing more rv’s, although I’m sure over the next few weeks that’ll change. k.Re: TC and real off-roadingSearch “jefe4x4” here and on other sites. Death Valler, Mojave Road, Anza Borrego and more. Plenty of good trip reports and tips. k.Re: Toyo 18" tire with over 4k lb ratingYes, I run them. 285/75-18 at2. '05 f350. Yes, they are rated for more than the wheels. Given a choice between a wheel stronger than a tire, or a tire stronger than the wheel, I go with a stronger tire every time... ;) As far as the tire goes, I like them a lot. Slightly louder than I expected but still quiet with the windows up. They track well, made in the USA, and from what I can tell so far they are tough. If you are regularly going to push them weight wise though, a 19.5 will be safer and probably wear a lot longer. But for an all around tire on a stock size wheel they are hard to beat. k.Re: Where to camp at Zion National parkAnother vote for Zion Canyon Campground. Stayed there twice, once full hookup the other time in a tent. It's on the Virgin river with great access. Facilities are clean, token showers. Both trips, spring and summer, we weren't able to get reservations or first come first served in the park. It's a the 2nd to last shuttle stop before the park and they're short stops so it is walk able. Shuttle service in town is fantastic, never driven except arriving or leaving town. k.
