We had a Chevy Express a few years back (brand new) we towed a 29 foot ultra light Terry. Can not remember how much it weighed. Regardless the Express Didn't even make it to 60,000 miles before the van died. Mechanic said it was from towing. The engine literally blew up. It was only 5 years old. Just my own personal experience with a large passenger van. They just don,t seem like good tow vehicles. There are lots of engine & drivetrain choices available, and some are more powerful than others. If you were towing a 30ft trailer with the 4.8L V8 in a Express 1500 (half-ton with small engine), then yeah, no surprise it blew up. I have a much harder time believing that an Express 3500 (one-ton) with a 6.0L engine blew up because of towing. Many times the same engines/transmissions from the trucks are derated when used in the vans. Do you remember what engine you had? 1500/2500/3500? I'm curious since you mentioned it died an early death.Re: cell for nissan navigationIt is my understanding that the low end navigation systems use your phone to make a call and get directions, which are then read to you. They don't have map data locally. Some of the Ford Sync systems work this way.Re: Trip Planning Software - Not Sure About MS Street & TripsUnder "More Options" from the Route Planner tab, there is a setting for flexibility. Mine defaults to 1/4 hour. You can use this to try and stretch to the next destination - or set it to 'none' and you'll get your exact times. Also, you can set an arrival/departure time for each stop on your route.Re: those damn scissor jacksI just sprayed mine with wd40 to clean up all the gunk and then wiped lithium grease on moving parts. Night and day difference in how easy it was to work the jacks.Re: FYI Basic Solar Kit from CostcoFrom the pictures, the charge controller looks like a Xantrex C35 35A, 12/24V PWM Charge Controller.Re: Shower headWe put this one in last year and like it: Camco 43711 Shower HeadRe: 6v battery lifespan? Some iota charger/converters can be upgraded to a 3 stage charger for only $15 bucks. It's worth checking to see if you have the magic charge port on the converter.Re: Practical use of solarI just picked up a 160W portable panel. This allows me to park in the shade and move the panels into a sunnier spot away from the trailer. Wife and I love that there is no loud stinky generator. I would recommend this mod to everyone. Thought process: Wanted power, but didn't want to deal with generator issues. Too afraid to put holes in roof of trailer to mount solar panels. Found inexpensive portable system, bought it! I got mine from Solarblvd, but they appear to be out of stock right now. Now I don't worry about power while camping, its on to worrying about the water.Re: Spare tire OR NOT dcmac214 wrote: Why not, when you get new tires, use the best of the replaced tires for your spare? May not be as good as getting a brand new tire for a spare but (1) it's going to save you some money and (2) it's a spare, not a running tire, if you ever have to use it you're going to travel baby-easy to the next tire shop to replace the lost running tire. I bought new tires last week and did just that. They took the best of the 4 tires and moved it to spare. Didn't cost me anything extra. They didn't even have to remount it - all 5 of the rims were the same. I had thought about it, and when the guy at the tire shop mentioned that my spare was 15 years old, it seemed logical to replace a 15 year old tire with one that was only several years old at a cost of $0.00. In 15+ years of driving, I have never had a flat or need for a spare. I don't want to try my luck though, and since I tend to get out there - I carry one with me.Re: Any problems using ethernet powerline adapter inside RV?My understanding is you cannot cross phases with those powerline adapters. So yes, if you have a 50A trailer, it may limit which outlets will see the signal.
