My kids got one for me as a father's day present several years back when we got our first rig with a 50Amp cord. Takes up next to no space, easily mounts in the basement, and is especially handy in colder weather when the cord is stiff. Best gift they ever bought for me. Here's a link to a video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJrJEH0WBaQRe: So what's the deal with weight stations? Horsedoc wrote: We have bee required to stop in one of the border states. We were on I-10 and there flashing signs said "all vehicles must stop for inspection" We got flagged into the shelter and the autos were waved on thru the regular lane. Three nice LEO types wanted to know where we were from as I pulled up and he just tipped his hat and said something like 'go ahead, you're fine' I suspct they were looking for illegals and we didn't fit the profile of a coyote. Yep. This was a border control check, looking for illegals and drugs. A common occurrence on I-10.Re: Death Valley recommendations? Thanks, all, for the great information. As many of you had predicted, there is no availability at Furnace Creek, so we’re going to have to look outside of the park. Based on your comments and suggestions, I ended up putting a priority on finding a campground as close to the park as possible. So, this morning, I was able to reserve a site at the Longstreet Casino & RV Park. (Thanks for that recommendation, Acampingwewillgo.). Again, my thanks to all for the good information.Death Valley recommendations? We’ll be leaving Las Vegas on 3/18 and are considering heading over to Death Valley NP for a few days. Never been there, and am looking for some thoughts and suggestions as to what to see, and how long and where to stay. Our rig is a 40’ fiver, and we didn’t bring our generator, so looking for at least W&E hookups. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. TIA...Re: NOLA Park Recommendation hawkhill wrote: Well, Bayou Segnette State Park mets all of your qualifications, except it does not have Sewer hook up. You'll have access to free decent WiFi, good cellphone connection, free laundry, and long flat spacious sites. Some of which have nice wooden patios. It is quiet, but there are a couple of good restaurants nearby. We did not use their restroom facilities; however, we did hear that they were a little dated. There is some waterways in the park so bring mosquito repellent. X2 on Bayou Signette. All of the above at a very reasonable price. It’s on the other side of the river from the city, and a short drive to a ferry that will take you across the river for a couple of bucks. From there, it’s a reasonable walk to the WWII museum, or a short cab ride if you’d rather go that route. It’s been our go-to location for NOLA for a few years now. And then there’s the fresh fish/shrimp market just down the road. What’s not to like?Re: Keystone Avalanche or Best quality 5th wheelHaving owned a Cedar Creek, a Jayco Designer, and currently a Grand Design Solitude, I’d echo those recommending a lightly used, one or two year-old higher end rig over a new mid quality fiver. Definitely more bang for your buck, and also something less likely to fall apart after a few top years of use. While it’s sometimes difficult to tell the difference in build quality, you have the benefit of being able to drop over to the Elkhart, Indiana area for a few factory tours seeing as you’re from central Illinois. IMHO, the Grand Design Solitude tour is a good one to do first as a benchmark. Good luck and happy hunting!Re: Does this make sense - Yellowstone and Salt Lake Rental?I’d strongly consider renting a car in Jackson Hole during your stay in the Tetons and Yellowstone. Having to tear down and set up every day is a PITA, you’ll save a bunch of fuel and mileage charges as you’ll be driving some fair distances around both parks, and then there’s the challenges of finding parking spaces in pull outs and parking areas suitable for RV’s. You will also likely have times when one person needs to make a run to the grocery or wherever while the other(s) want to stay at the campsite. Hard to do when the RV is your only transportation. Lots of folks do SLC RV rentals for Yellowstone and the Tetons, and it is a great way to experience the parks. Beats the heck out of going the motel/hotel route, IMHO.Re: Diesel fuel prices - have they been dropping? minnow wrote: Itching2go wrote: A lot of the price differences between diesel and gas have little to do with the actual cost of production. In many states, diesel is taxed at a much higher rate than gas. The justification often offered up is that most diesel is burned by heavy trucks that cause more wear and tear on the roads, so it is appropriate that they pay more in taxes for road repair. In actuality, I suspect that it is simply a matter of political expediency as a higher tax on diesel would make fewer voters angry. In the last fuel tax go-round in Indiana for example, diesel ended up being taxed at something like $.50/gallon higher than gas. That may be true in some states but that is not the case here in SC. Lucky you, Minnow. Explains why diesel is less than $3.00 there and almost $3.50 here in Indiana. I think I'll wait to fill up in your neighborhood next time we're heading down to the Southeast!Re: Diesel fuel prices - have they been dropping?A lot of the price differences between diesel and gas have little to do with the actual cost of production. Bottom line is that if you are wanting to head south into Kentucky/Tennessee on I-75, there isn't a good way to bypass the area of construction around Florence. Personally, if towing, I prefer I-275 to avoid the Cincinnati traffic and especially the I-75 bridge over the Ohio. But that's me...
