BTW, have you considered Bonito CG (Coconino NF off US Rt 89 east of Flagsff) with Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments right there inlieu of Petrified Forest? My family found both much more interesting than "looking at a bunch of old rocks, again." Their initial reaction to the Grand Canyon's South Rim was similiar but the North Rim left a major impression. Well, you can only do what you can do and hope for the best when travel with off-springs . Re: North vs South Rim Grand Canyon?Hands down - the North Rim is way better but I'd stay at DeMotte Park CG (Kaibab NF). Adjacent mountain meadow is good for wildlife viewing. Also stop at Visitor Center in Jacob Lake for trail info. And than there are the viewpoints - Dog Point, Marble Canyon, and more that are convenient to DeMott Park.August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse - any tipsGetting questions from readers of forestcamping.com about the 8/21/17 solar eclipse. The swath where you'll see a total eclipse passes thru at least a dozen national forests and one grassland. Should be awesome but I have little knowledge of such an event. Can you provide some thoughts, tips, or suggestions I can pass on to forestcamping.com readers? Thank you.Re: Camping and fishing next to Madison RiverI would suggest Madison River cg if the snow has melted or Riverview cg if not. Both are in Beaverhead NF and you can find more information on at forestcamping.com FYI: fishing the Madison River is one of the ways the fabulous hospital in Ennis attracts doctor :-)Re: Where to go in AprilI would think you have come to realize there are lots of options. It would probably be better to narrow those possibilities down to what you would like best to see, do, and/or experience. I live in southeast Arizona so Springtime, with trees turning green and the flowers blooming would draw me to the Southern states. And the history of that area is another attraction. However for scenery, geology and ancient history you can't beat Arizona and Utah. Of course both these regions are loaded with super campgrounds in national forests and grasslands.Re: Northeast Suggestions? Not sure how far "3 hours" is but I agree with others, you'll find something in either Wayne or Allegheny nfs. Id's consider Hearts Content in the later and Burr Oak in the former. Also, take a look at the Monongahela NF. Forestcamping.com has lots of detail info for each. You might also want to take at look at the forest's Motor Vehicle Users Map (MVUM) for dispersed camping. Good luck and enjoy.Re: Olympic Peninsula, WA - all NFS sites 21-foot limit? My word but you did get a lot of responses to your query. I didn't know about that supposed 21' limitation. Camped only in NFS on Olympic Pen in my 31' MH with no problems. Klahowya cg was the bestest!!!!Re: Mt Rushmore & YellowstoneNot sure if it was suggested but I would recommend a swim in Firehole River in that canyon. Check the park map for the road. You'll recognize the swim area by all the cars in the parked in designated parking slots. Take a lunch and wear sturdy shoes.Re: Boondocking in MontanaCheck on-line for the Motor Vehicle User Map (try search string: "helena national forest mvum"). The only problem with mvum is it often doesn't show non-forest service connecting road but great for finding dispersed camping areas.Great news!Big Biloxi campground in the DeSoto National Forest has been restored and is now open to camping! Hurricane Issac did a number on this sweet little campground but they've even got the electric hookups repaired! In my humble opinion, this is one Forest Service everyone should enjoy at least once. Fred is updating forestcamping.com as I type this.
