All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Quick overnightOur first experience trying this was a disaster. Every truck stop, rest area, on ramp, off ramp, was completely full of truckers. Couldn’t even stop to use bathrooms if you’re in RV. Maybe if you’re early enough you can find a spot, but is not guaranteed, and who wants to stop that early anyway? We managed to find a spot hidden from view between two large trucks in a Flying J eventually. As mentioned, it was very noisy but we managed to sleep a few hours. We had traveled through Atlanta, middle of the night so maybe it was busy area.Re: Late Fall Camping SmokiesSmokemont on the Cherokee, NC side of the National Park has limited availability after Nov 1, all are first come first served. The only sections open are A and B. No reservations are accepted from November 1 to about May 15. No one staffs the entry office; there are envelopes in which to place your fee and you select whichever site is open. Also, be aware there are no hookups at any of the campgrounds in the National Park. No hot water or showers in restrooms. Overnight stays are not allowed outside the campgrounds. Also be aware, the road between Cherokee and Gatlinburg (newfound gap road, or hwy 441) closes if there is any ice, or snow, so to get over the mountain you have to make a long detour. Coming from Florida, that won’t be a problem unless you want to go to TN. We are campground hosts at Smokemont in the Fall. I may be able to answer other questions if needed.Re: Fresh tank is filling while hooked to city waterOurs did that and we had to replace our Sureflo water pump. First repair shop had no clue. Finally just told the next repair shop to replace the water pump and it was fixed. Good Sam policy covered all but the deductible when they proved the pump was at fault.Re: Where will you be workamping summer 2016We will be volunteer camp hosts in Shenandoah National Park in May and June, at Big Meadows. Our first time there. Planning to return to the Smokies in the Fall at Smokemont in NC.Re: Stink bugs!!The soap and water is simply dish soap such as Dawn, mixed with water, in a screw top jar. The bugs are not attracted to it, you have to knock them into it, then close the lid. They die without getting squished so they don't stink. It has worked well enough for sluggish bugs but I fear they are perking up now that warmer weather is here. By the way, we bought the Ortho Home Defense Max today, and plan to try it soon.Re: Stink bugs!!The Ortho Home Defense sounds like exactly what we need. I'll look for it and let you know how it works out. Non toxic when dry and no odor according to the info I found. Thank you!Re: Stink bugs!!Did the bomb leave a bad odor? Not that that matters at this point I guess! I have a bottle of soapy water I'm using too, has screw top lid. Also tried one made with 2 liter coke bottle cut in half and top inserted upside down into bottom filled with soapy water. We have a short local trip coming up then home for about 5 weeks before going to host at Shenandoah May and June. May have to strip down the camper and use the bomb.Stink bugs!!Our travel trailer is infested with stink bugs. They are hiding somewhere and one or two at a time show up. Last Fall we were camp hosts in NC Smokies, and they hitchhiked home with us. The last week of October they were all over the campsite. I tried bug spray which was a mistake, left an odor and only stunned them long enough to catch in my soapy water trap. The back storage compartment has a strong odor too which may be because I sprayed a lot of bug spray in it, and unfortunately the odor comes through to the inside. I don't know for sure whether the lingering odor is the bugs or chemicals from the spray. I'm stumped, don't know how I'm going to rid our camper of these creepy pests.Re: Mountain Directories East and WestIn regard to the mountain vs foothill comment, it's not so much the elevation as the grade and elevation change. This Florida girl prefers to know what to expect and choose the least difficult route. We were on the Blue Ridge Pkwy in Sept. in NC and came upon a couple at a pull-out whose class C brakes were on fire because they were inexperienced in mountain driving. There were a LOT of ranger reports for stranded motorists in trouble in the Smokies. As camp hosts we heard a lot of their calls. Be prepared!Re: Mountain Directories East and WestRoyF, I saw those crazy prices too, I think they must be an attempt to scam but don't know why anyone would fall for it! Joelc, that looks interesting and appears to have a lot of useful information. Thanks for the suggestion.
